5 deadly sins of presenting financials - Business Management Daily

An experienced CFO shares his knowledge on the basics of organizing and presenting data.

Here are a few of what he calls the ?deadly sins? of sharing financials:

Deadly Sin #1: Not right-justifying columns of numbers. This, he assures us, is not too obvious to mention.

Make sure your audience has a way to determine the unit of measure for every number in your reports.

Deadly Sin #2: Basing column width or row height on the length of the caption. The caption doesn?t matter. Numbers do.

Deadly Sin #3: Using visual effects for any reason other than clarifying, differentiating or adding meaning. The chief corollary of this rule is to avoid the ?ransom note effect,? achieved by using a bunch of different typefaces and sizes.

Deadly Sin #4: Presenting unclear, imprecise or incorrect row and column headings.

You might review something several times without seeing that it can be read two ways. That?s why you need others with eagle eyes to critique it before you make it final.

Deadly Sin #5: Failing to include a title and timestamp (date and time) on printed spreadsheets.

People think I'm weird because I drink milk even when it's not breakfast..But I'm from Texas, and most of us are tea drinkers, so I also drink sweet tea every day. It's a necessity in my household ;D

Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?: Berlin Review - The Hollywood ...

The Bottom Line

Lively Taiwanese dramedy pits repressed sexuality against longstanding family traditions.

Venue

Berlin Film Festival (Panorama Special)

Writer-Director

Arvin Chen

Cast

Richie Jen, Mavis Fan, Stone, Kimi Hsia, Lawrence Ko, Wong Ka Lok

BERLIN -- Hoping to answer the question posed by its titular Shirelles song -- which, as is de rigueur in any recent Asian film, is performed here in a full-length Karaoke version ? writer-director Arvin Chen?s Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? follows two Taiwanese couples trying to stick together amid emotional and sexual upheavals that threaten the sanctity of their safe, and hetero, relationships. Wry and whimsical, but perhaps too broad for artsy Western tastes, this ensemble romantic dramedy should see decent business in the East (Warner Bros. is releasing in Taiwan), with ancillary possibilities in other markets, including those catering to the LGBT set.

From its playful premiere sequence, which concludes with a character opening an umbrella and floating up to the sky, Tomorrow distinguishes itself from the kind of dark, Taipei-set stories that have filled fests and art-houses over the last few decades. Indeed, the American born-and-educated Chen?s debut feature, Au Revoir Tapei, was already a genre-jumping crossover, and his latest seems to tread in similar waters, sharing influences with both local classics (Edward Yang -- another purveyor of 60?s pop -- comes to mind) and works from Hollywood?s Golden Age, especially the Technicolor romances of Vincent Minelli and George Cukor.

But this lighthearted tale of repressed sexuality and marital woes seems to have a different kind of agenda, even if it often fits the mode of your typical mainstream rom-com, with the usual run of quid pro quos, mistaken identities and botched wedding plans.

The story focuses on two thirty-something pairs: On the one side there?s the affable optician, Weichung (Richie Jen), who?s been married for nine years to corporate clerk, Feng (Mavis Fan, excellent). And on the other there?s Weichung?s sister, Mandy (Kimi Hsia), a sexy maneater who?s decided to finally settle down and tie the knot with the friendly sad sack, San-San (Stone).

Of course, things are not so simple, starting with the fact that Weichung clearly has a past that?s far less straight than the bifocals he meticulously prepares in his shop. He crosses paths at his sis? rehearsal dinner with a flamboyant wedding photographer (Lawrence Ko, hilarious) who, despite the fact that he?s also married, is leading a double-life as a gay party boy, and advises Weichung to do the same. When a handsome young flight attendant (HK actor Wong Ka Lok) ventures into the man?s store, it?s love at first (near or far) sight, and although the stoic husband and dad tries to fight off his homoerotic urges, he can only hold out for so long.

Meanwhile, Mandy starts having second thoughts about her upcoming marriage, and they come to a head in a funny flashback that shows her freaking out during an all-too routine shopping trip to Carrefour. She decides to ditch San-San and lock herself indoors, binging on instant ramen and cheesy soap operas until she can figure out whether she?s really in love at all.

Directing with an easygoing, occasionally swoony style, Chen cuts back and forth between the various characters as they deal with their quashed desires and emotional predicaments, with the main plot-point pivoting on whether Weichung?s wife Feng, who is hoping to have a second child, will learn about her husband?s hidden sexual identity. The Mandy-San-San debacle is, on the other hand, a bit too cursory, and seems to be there mainly for comic relief and as a narrative framing device.

Indeed, more than anyone else, Feng seems to be the center of attention here, and the film inevitably wonders what she?ll do about the truth once she uncovers it. In other words, how can a society steeped in marital traditions deal with shifting cultural attitudes toward homosexuality? If Chen?s ultimate answer may seem like a copout to some, it?s perhaps less important than the fact that he?s raising the question at all, especially in this kind of carefree, commercially-minded movie.

Filled with colorful street scenes and candy-tinged interiors (courtesy of D.P. Hsia Shao-Yu, Return Ticket), Tomorrow reveals a Taipei that has rarely looked so jolly on screen, and the film coasts along to its final conflict at a fairly brisk pace, even if there are a few longueurs along the way. Still, when Chen stops to let Fan (Flying Swords of Dragon Gate) belt out her own alcohol-infused version of the title track (written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin), it?s the kind of indulgence we can all enjoy.

$1 million reward offered as LA manhunt enters fourth day

This undated photo released by the Los Angeles Police Department shows suspect Christopher Dorner, a former Los Angeles officer.

By Sharon Bernstein, NBCLosAngeles.com

Authorities in Los Angeles have offered a $1 million reward for information leading to the capture of a fired LA police officer sought in connection with a series of killings and threats against his former colleagues and their families.

The reward was announced even as investigators continued to comb the snowy mountains around Big Bear Lake, where Christopher Dorner's burned out truck was found on Feb. 7, and hundreds of officers patrolled the neighborhoods where people live who were threatened by Dorner in an online screed.?

Every day that Dorner is loose, said LAPD Chief Charlie Beck, is another day when the likelihood of an attack on police officers or their families increases.

"We are asking the public, 'Please help us to protect you,' " Beck said at a news conference. "Please help us to find Dorner before he is able to kill again."

Dorner is wanted in the slayings of three people and the ambush-style shooting of two others, all part of a revenge-style rampage that began last Sunday, when he allegedly shot the daughter of a police union lawyer and her fianc? in an Irvine parking garage.

The heart of the search continued to be the San Bernardino mountains where Dorner was last seen, Beck said on Sunday. Officers will also look for him near where some 50 LAPD families live who were threatened by the former policeman.

"You fish where the fish are," Beck said. "And Mr. Dorner has made his intentions very clear."

Timeline: Revenge-Plot Slayings | Read: Full Manifesto | Map: Search Locations

Also on Sunday, the Riverside Police Department released the name of one of Dorner's victims. Michael Crain, 34, was ambushed by a man police believe was Dorner on April 7, as he sat with his partner at a stoplight in his patrol car.

Crain, who was born in Anaheim, was an 11-year veteran of the Riverside police force. He leaves behind a wife and two small children.

Los Angeles officials announce a one million dollar reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of former LAPD officer Christopher Dorner.

A second reward, worth $100,000, could also be on the way, a spokesman for Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich said Sunday.

Tony Bell said that Antonovich and fellow supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas planned to ask colleagues on the Board of Supervisors to approve that reward for information leading to Dorner's capture at their meeting on Tuesday.

News of the rewards came as the LAPD announced it would re-open its investigation into Dorner?s firing from the department in 2008.

In a 11,400 word manifesto published on line, the ex-officer blamed his killing spree on his termination, saying that he would only stop when his name was cleared.

Re-opening the investigation seems to have two purposes: to communicate to members of the public who have responded to Dorner?s complaints that the LAPD treated him unfairly, and to send a message to the ex-officer himself.

The department "is not opening it because of the accusations or because of the musings of someone who is a multiple murderer now," Cmdr. Andrew Smith said Saturday. Chief Charlie Beck is "wants to ensure that the public knows that the Los Angeles Police Department is fair and transparent, " Smith said.

Witnesses will be re-interviewed and the investigation into Dorner's firing will get a "fresh set of eyes," Smith said. He also issued a plea for Dorner to come forward.

"He can turn himself in and he can be able to get his side of the story out," Smith said.

Deputies have been combing the ski resort area of Big Bear, where authorities found former LAPD Officer Christopher Dorner?s burned-out truck, since Thursday afternoon.

Investigators found weapons inside the truck, suggesting Dorner may have abandoned the truck in an unplanned hurry.

Former LAPD Chief William Bratton told the "Today Show" on Saturday that evidence suggests Dorner's truck may have become stuck in the mud. Previously, it was speculated that the truck may have been intentionally set ablaze as a distraction.

Investigators on Saturday were also trying to determine whether the truck's axle was broken when they found it, or if it was fractured while being towed from the forestry road.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, interviewed outside a prayer breakfast downtown, urged Dorner to turn himself in.

"We will find you," Villaraigosa said. "You?ve disgraced the public safety -- the police profession -- turn yourself in."

As the search in Big Bear was winding down for the night on Saturday, LAPD announced the department is reopening the case into Dorner's 2008 firing from the force.

In an 11,400-word document published online, Dorner laid out plans to kill law enforcement officers and their families, vowing to stop the attacks when LAPD "states the truth about my innocence."

iPhone Software Update Seems To Be Killing Battery Life - Business ...

Last month Apple released a new version of its operating system, iOS 6.1.

But some people who have installed the upgrade are reporting subsequent issues with the iPhone's battery life. They also say their devices are overheating.

Vodafone UK has issued a text message warning to iPhone users on its network, blaming issues with 3G performance. In addition, The Next Web reviewed 27 pages of complaints on Apple's Support Communities forum, the first of which was logged on January 28.

Apple has not addressed the potential iOS 6.1 issue yet.

But one possible solution was offered by an iPhone user who visited an Apple Store genius (via The Next Web):

I went to see the genius? yesterday. My problem was that my usage was almost identical to my stand by times, which means that something was continuing to run in the background after closing all the apps.

I was told to turn off location services and then one by one turn each in turn to see which one was causing the drain on the battery. I was impatient so just factory reset the handset which seems to have fixed the problem.

I?ll keep you all posted on how it continues.

Progressive Change Campaign Committee Expands Anti-Mitch McConnell Advertising

The Progressive Change Campaign Committee said Friday it would expand advertising attacking Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for his resistance to gun control, signaling that the Kentucky senator's 2014 re-election will meet heavy resistance on the airwaves.

The new purchase of more than $15,000 in advertising adds to an ongoing $27,700 campaign for ads that will air in Kentucky. The ads will run during Saturday's basketball game featuring the Louisville Cardinals and Notre Dame, during the Sunday political talk shows and during President Barack Obama's State of the Union Address on Tuesday. The ads also will air on Washington cable television during the game and the State of the Union address.

The expansion follows Karl Rove's American Crossroads' purchase of $10,000 in online advertising Wednesday targeting actress Ashley Judd, who has suggested she may challenge McConnell.

McConnell has tried to rally gun owners to shore up support for re-election. A recent call went out to Kentuckyians with McConnell saying, "President Obama and his team are doing everything in their power to restrict your constitutional right to keep and bear arms." A fundraising email by McConnell's campaign said gun owners are "literally surrounded" by "gun-grabbers in the Senate."

Armenia holds 2 in attack on presidential hopeful

YEREVAN, Armenia (AP) ? Armenia's National Security Agency has arrested it has arrested two suspects in the shooting of a presidential candidate, it announced Friday.

Paruir Airikian, one of eight candidates in the Feb. 18 election, was shot and wounded by an unidentified assailant near his home in the Armenian capital a week ago.

The agency said the suspects arrested Thursday confessed to participating in the attack. Investigators are still looking into motives behind the shooting, it said, but gave no further details.

The attack on Airikian has thrown the election campaign into disarray, raising the possibility that the vote could be postponed.

Armenia's constitution calls for a presidential election to be postponed for 15 days if a candidate cannot take part due to circumstances beyond his control.

Airikian's lawyer said this week that the candidate would not seek such a postponement, but Airikian said Friday he intended to ask the constitutional court to push back the date by two weeks.

Megadunes and Hoar Frost: 6 Facts About Snow

Winter snowstorms, like the Nor'easter that just slammed New England, transform gray days into winter wonderlands.

So while you're stuck inside, or within snowshoe-walking distance, here are six fun facts about snow, from the idea that no two snowflakes are alike to the bizarre megadunes that blanket Antarctica.

Unique beauty

According to physicists, it's actually true that no two snowflakes are alike ? well, at least when it comes to complex snowflakes.

Snowflakes form when water droplets in the clouds freeze to form a six-sided crystal structure. As the temperature cools, more water vapor freezes and grows in branches from the six sides of the seed crystal. As the crystals form, they are randomly tossed about inside the clouds, which vary in temperature.

The temperature greatly affects how the snowflake forms, so while the simplest hexagonal crystals may look alike, more complicated beauties each have their own unique shapes. [See Stunning Photos of Snowflakes]

White triangles

Most snowflakes form dazzling crystal patterns with six sides. But occasionally, a triangular crystal forms, something that has puzzled physicists for years. A 2009 study in the open-access, pre-publish journal arXiv.org revealed that triangular snowflakes form when the six sides of the seed crystals are slightly asymmetric. This makes them wobble randomly as a snowflake falls, allowing the bigger sides to hit the fast-flowing air inside the cloud, and grow at the expense of the smaller sides.

Other snowflakes have even stranger shapes: Some look like hourglasses, others like spools of thread and still others like needles. And while the quintessential snowflake is the six-armed, symmetrical beauty, most versions are hardly so picturesque. In fact, since the arms of a snowflake all grow randomly, asymmetrical snowflakes are more common.

Snowy shapes

The types of snowflakes that form depend a lot on the temperature and moisture in the clouds, according to a 2005 review in the journal Reports on Progress in Physics. Right around freezing temperatures, hexagonal plates (the cross-section is a two-dimensional hexagon) and the iconic, six-sided snowflake (known as a dendrite) form.

As the temperature cools, snowflakes develop into needles, then hexagonal prisms and even hollow columns. Go colder still, and dendrites form at much larger sizes. And at truly frigid temperatures, the frigid air forms prisms and flat plates.

Piles and piles

Because snow is so fluffy (meaning it's chock full of air), a relatively small amount of water can translate into a huge pile of snow. An inch of rain on average makes about 10 inches of snow. The biggest snowfalls on record are hard to compare, but the Great Snow of 1717 dropped about 3 to 4 feet (0.9 to 1.2 meters) on Boston inhabitants, with some drifts reaching 25 feet (7.6-m), according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center.

In 1959, a snowstorm in Mt. Shasta dropped as much as 15.75 feet (4.8 meters) on inhabitants of the California region, according to the College of the Siskiyous. In the 1998 to 1999 snow season, about 95 feet (28.9 m) of snow fell on Mt. Baker, Wash.

Graupel and Hoar Frost?

An old saying claims the Eskimos have dozens of different words for describing snow. While that turned out to be a myth, there are many types of snow crystals and even more snow formations. Aside from the snowflake, there's also hoar frost and graupel, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center.

Hoar frost forms on surfaces that are colder than the frost point in the air around them, so water goes straight from vapor to solid. This spiky, fluffy snow tends to form on tree branches, telephone wires and other skinny items exposed to the chilly air. Graupel, which consists of hard ice pellets, forms when snowflakes fall through a cloud that contains supercooled water droplets. The droplets freeze onto the snowflakes and form misshapen, lumpy balls.

Snow landscape

While the snow on the driveway may just be a pile, the fluffy white stuff creates beautiful formations in nature. Lovers of winter sports know to be wary of cornices, overhanging snow that juts from the edge of a cliff.

And in Antarctica, giant snow formations known as megadunes form from monstrous snow crystals that are up to 0.75 inches (2 cm) across, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center. (There can be several?snow crystals in a single snowflake.) In arid locales like Death Valley, Calif., piles of snow can be transformed into penitents: bizarre, spiky formations that look like the stalagmites that form in caves.

Points to Consider When Shopping for Replacement Windows ...

When you shift to your new house, you may have some priority tasks in your to-do-list. Reaching out for?window replacement services might also be one of the main concerns in the case of the leakage. With the passage of time, they become bowed that causes water leakage. In this case, an immediate improvement becomes necessary. Once the installation is done properly by professional, the snug seals repel the street sounds and a blowing wind.

A replacement of windows will definitely make your home comfortable, plus the effect on heating bills will be negligible. Energy-efficient windows are definitely the best choice that helps you save 12 percent of overall energy costs of your home. Together with replacement windows, you also need to look after at several points such as insulation of the windows. You can also dig up some ideas to improve your windows rather than replacing them. If you have decided shopping for new windows, then below are the things you should consider.

Points to Consider When Shopping for Replacement Windows

When you are going to buy new windows for your house, you should choose energy-efficient windows.

If you tired of the high bills of the power you are paying every month, then the reason behind this could be the windows have become drafty and deteriorated.

You can save different amounts of energy that varies depending upon the type of window. Triple-glazed variants have a greater result on heating bills than replacing one double-glazed window to another. To optimize efficiency,? find the most effective windows within your budget.

When choosing the windows, here is what to look for:

Frame material

Most of the windows are vinyl because they are less expensive. Vinyl releases toxic during manufacturing, hence it?s the least eco-friendly. The aluminium frames are also not used widely as it conducts heat. Fibreglass and wood windows are the best options, as both are environmentally friendly. However, wood windows and fibreglass are costly options. You need to repaint the wooden windows, whereas fibreglass demands less maintenance.

Style

Style does matter. Of course, how does it appear is the important thing but here we are talking about the way it opens. It applies to the quality of its seal and capacity to reduce drafts. For tightest seal, the pivoting casement windows are the right options. Sliding windows are cost-effective and have the least effective seal.

Consider Environment

When buying energy-efficient windows, you also ought to consider the environmental factors. Choosing the right type of windows will help you cut the cost of the monthly bill.

Low-e coatings

Low-e (emissive) finish is a thin metal-oxide coating that keeps your house warm by redirecting the heat back.

If you want to repair your home interior or upgrading windows, replacement windows are the best choice. You can visit local shops and find reasonably priced windows with better styling.

NASA telescopes discover strobe-like flashes in young stars

Feb. 7, 2013 ? Two of NASA's great observatories, the Spitzer and Hubble space telescopes, have teamed up to uncover a mysterious infant star that behaves like a strobe light.

Every 25.34 days, the object, designated LRLL 54361, unleashes a burst of light. Although a similar phenomenon has been observed in two other young stellar objects, this is the most powerful such beacon seen to date.

The heart of the fireworks is hidden behind a dense disk and an envelope of dust. Astronomers propose the light flashes are caused by periodic interactions between two newly formed stars that are binary, or gravitationally bound to each other. LRLL 54361 offers insights into the early stages of star formation when lots of gas and dust is being rapidly accreted, or pulled together, to form a new binary star.

Astronomers theorize the flashes are caused by material suddenly being dumped onto the growing stars, known as protostars. A blast of radiation is unleashed each time the stars get close to each other in their orbits. This phenomenon, called pulsed accretion, has been seen in later stages of star birth, but never in such a young system or with such intensity and regularity.

"This protostar has such large brightness variations with a precise period that it is very difficult to explain," said James Muzerolle of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Md. His paper recently was published in the science journal Nature.

Discovered by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, LRLL 54361 is a variable object inside the star-forming region IC 348, located 950 light-years from Earth. Data from Spitzer revealed the presence of protostars. Based on statistical analysis, the two stars are estimated to be no more than a few hundred thousand years old.

The Spitzer infrared data, collected repeatedly during a period of seven years, showed unusual outbursts in the brightness of the suspected binary protostar. Surprisingly, the outbursts recurred every 25.34 days, which is a very rare phenomenon.

Astronomers used NASA's Hubble Space Telescope to confirm the Spitzer observations and reveal the detailed stellar structure around LRLL 54361. Hubble observed two cavities above and below a dusty disk. The cavities are visible by tracing light scattered off their edges. They likely were blown out of the surrounding natal envelope of dust and gas by an outflow launched near the central stars. The disk and the envelope prevent the suspected binary star pair from being observed directly. By capturing multiple images over the course of one pulse event, the Hubble observations uncovered a spectacular movement of light away from the center of the system, an optical illusion known as a light echo.

Muzerolle and his team hypothesized the pair of stars in the center of the dust cloud move around one another in a very eccentric orbit. As the stars approach each other, dust and gas are dragged from the inner edge of a surrounding disk. The material ultimately crashes onto one or both stars, which triggers a flash of light that illuminates the circumstellar dust. The system is rare because close binaries account for only a few percent of our galaxy's stellar population. This is likely a brief, transitory phase in the birth of a star system.

Muzerolle's team next plans to continue monitoring LRLL 54361 using other facilities, including the European Space Agency's Herschel Space Telescope. The team hopes to eventually obtain more direct measurements of the binary star and its orbit.

Report: Family and medical leave law working

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Labor Department says just 16 percent of eligible workers took time off last year under the Family and Medical Leave Act to recover from an illness, care for a new child or tend to a sick relative.

The data comes from a government survey issued on the law's 20th anniversary. Labor officials say it shows the law is helping millions of workers cope with family hardships with little disruption to employers.

The law allows eligible workers up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave without fear of losing their jobs.
