It?s one thing to get a call about my daughter being injured at daycare. But it?s a whole other story when she?s the one doing the hurting.

The first time I was told that Princess scratched another child I figured it was just a one-time thing. I chalked it up to the terrible twos. But, I was completely shocked upon hearing that she had to be picked up.

?What do you mean pick her up?? I asked.
?If a child breaks the skin of another friend that child has to be picked up. I?m sorry,? the administrator said.
?So you mean she?s suspended for the day?? I asked.
?Yeah, I?m really sorry.? She replied.

What I thought would be an isolated incident almost turned into a routine. Princess has been sent home a total of three times for ?breaking skin.? We?d arrive to find our child in small room that we?ve now dubbed the ?holding cell.? When I told boss lady I couldn?t make it in to work one day, she laughed at the news. I guess it?s little funny when you think about it.

But, this situation shouldn?t be taken lightly.

I refuse to be the kind of mom who sweeps her child?s misconduct under the rug and forgets about it. For the record, my hubby and I explain to her that it?s not okay to scratch.

We encourage her to use her words, not her hands. ?We give hugs,? I?d say when dropping her off. We even read children?s books about bullying. With all that said, I do have mixed emotions about the whole suspension thing.

On one hand sending her home teaches her the lesson that if you do something bad, you?ll suffer the consequences. But, I also feel that sending a two-year-old home for a scratch is little too extreme. Okay, there was blood involved. I get it. But there were no hospital visits.

Besides, I wouldn?t want Princess trying to weasel her way out of going to school by digging her claws into another friend. My hubby and I can?t afford to keep taking days off.

HILLIARD, Ohio (AP) ? President Barack Obama and Republican rival Mitt Romney are turning the White House race in Ohio into a referendum on the auto bailout, an effort aimed at driving up turnout among their supporters in the election's waning days.

Obama, on a three-stop blitz across the swing state Friday, repeatedly reminded voters that he orchestrated the bailout to revive an industry that fuels the economy in the Midwest. And he slammed Romney for running advertisements in the state implying the bailout has forced car companies to move jobs overseas, an assertion Obama said was "not true."

"You don't scare hard-working Americans just to scare up some votes," Obama told voters at a rally in Hilliard, Ohio, just west of Columbus. "That's not what being president is about. That's not leadership."

Romney has dug in on the ads, which have been widely debunked. His campaign insists the spots are accurate. Whatever the case, the ad has caught the attention of some voters in Ohio, a state that has been saturated with political advertising for months.

"It offends me," said Jeanette Lewis, an Obama supporter from Columbus whose father worked on a GM assembly line in northeast Ohio. "The president hasn't turned a blind-eye to outsourcing. And people in Ohio know that."

The candidates' closing arguments on the auto bailout are aimed squarely at motivating supporters, underscoring how the focus in the campaign's final days has shifted to boosting turnout, not persuading the narrow pool of undecided voters. Obama needs big turnout from Ohio's Democratic-leaning union members, while Romney is seeking to shore up support among Republicans and independents who view the president as a big-government liberal and saw the bailout as government overreach.

The Republican nominee also needs to boost his support among white working-class voters. While Obama has trailed Romney with these voters nationally and several key target states, the president has closed that gap in Ohio, according to public and internal Democratic polls.

Private polling from both campaigns shows Obama with an edge across the state. For the president, winning Ohio, along with Iowa and Wisconsin, would put him over the required 270 Electoral College votes. If Romney loses Ohio, he would need to win nearly every other competitive state in order to reach 270.

And while Romney's campaign has reaffirmed the claims in the ad, Romney made no mention of the television spot or the auto industry during a rally at a heavy equipment manufacturer on the eastern edge of the Columbus area Friday.

Romney has been running an ad saying that Jeep would expand overseas at the expense of U.S. jobs, but he hasn't mentioned that on the campaign trail since last week.

Instead, he appealed broadly to what polls indicate to be a very small number of undecided voters in Ohio by asking them to consider his record as a chief executive and governor.

"What I hope they'll do is put aside the ads, put aside the attacks and then really focus on the record," he said in Pataskala. "Because as you know, talk is cheap. But a record, a record of accomplishment and achievement, that is something that happens with effort."

One in 8 Ohio jobs is connected to the auto industry.

"These companies are institutions, points of pride all over the state," said Jacob Foskuhl, an Obama supporter from Columbus. "It's not something you can just toy with in this economy at the last minute in an election."

But Mike Morton, a Romney backer from Columbus, said the bailout wasn't a silver bullet for Ohio's economy. "The unions benefited. Management didn't," Morton said. "There's a lot people don't know about this."

The bailout has been central to Obama's pitch in Ohio for months. The government rescue is credited with saving 1 million jobs, and Democrats say it's one of the reasons Ohio's unemployment rate is down to 7 percent, nearly a full point lower than the national average.

Obama's advisers are confidently predicting that backlash from Romney's auto ads could propel the president to victory in Ohio.

"We all felt prior to this week we were in very solid shape in the state of Ohio and our expectation is that our position has been strengthened by this," said David Plouffe, a senior adviser to Obama.

Aides also see the bailout as a tangible example of the larger message they are trying to impart on voters: that Obama is willing to side with the middle class, even if it means making politically difficult decisions. The bailout was initially unpopular, but it slowly gained momentum as the companies became profitable and added jobs.

"I knew betting on American workers was the right thing to do," Obama said in Ohio Friday. "That bet paid off."

Romney's team doubled down on its position Friday. Spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg said Obama's "mismanagement of the process has exposed taxpayers to a $25 billion loss. And these companies are expanding production overseas."

Romney spent months trying to mitigate the bailout's impact on the race by simply not talking about it. But he sharply shifted course this week when he launched the new TV and radio spots.

The TV ad says: "Obama took GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy and sold Chrysler to Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China." A radio ad makes a similar point.

The claims are highly misleading. In fact, Chrysler is adding 1,100 jobs to its plant in Toledo. It's also adding production facilities in China as demand for cars there grows. Because of trade rules, it's easier for companies to build cars for the Chinese market in China. It's also more efficient. Japanese automakers, for example, have plants in the U.S. to meet American demand.

Both GM and Chrysler have taken issue with the ads in recent days.

Counting votes: How the media figure out who won

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Ever hear about national elections where the winners aren't known for days as government officials count votes and double-check results? Thank goodness we don't have to wait that long for election results in the U.S., right?

Not so fast.

In the United States, most states don't announce official election results until weeks after Election Day. Florida is scheduled to certify its results Nov. 20 ? two weeks after the polls close. Ohio's deadline is Nov. 27.

The public can get unofficial results in some states from government websites on election night or early the next day. But how can you be sure who won? In close contests, how do you know whether there are enough remaining votes to change the outcome?

Most Americans are pretty certain they know who won from news media, which play a large role in not only reporting election results but figuring out who won ? usually long before the last votes are counted and certified.

It works like this:

The United States has a decentralized system for counting votes in national elections. No single government authority oversees the process. Instead, officials in more than 4,000 counties, townships and parishes across the nation tally votes for president, Congress, governor, state legislature and a host of state and local offices.

The Associated Press will deploy more than 5,000 workers on Nov. 6 to collect vote results from government agencies and report them to news organizations ? and the public ? around the world. In all, the AP will report results for nearly 7,000 races.

Government officials get the final say on who wins elections ? Congress verifies the Electoral College votes for president and vice president, while state and county officials certify election results in their jurisdictions. But the media get the first word on election night, an important role in the democratic process of a nation that demands fast and accurate information.

Analysts at the AP and other news organizations will use several tools to determine election winners, sometimes with very few votes actually counted. In elections for Congress and local offices, analysts will rely mainly on the AP vote count to determine the winners.

In statewide races for president, Senate and governor, analysts also will use exit polls, which are interviews with voters as they leave the polls on Election Day, and in some states, vote tallies from a randomly selected sample of precincts.

About 35 percent of the electorate is expected to vote before Election Day, either by mail or in person. To gauge how those people voted, analysts will use telephone polls of absentee voters in states where large numbers of people vote early.

For landslide elections, exit polls sometimes provide enough data to determine the winners before any votes are counted. Workers stand outside polling places throughout the day, asking voters to fill out confidential questionnaires about how they voted.

The AP and other news organizations have agreed to wait until poll closing time in any race before projecting a winner. Once the polls close, news organizations can declare winners in some landslide elections immediately, or shortly thereafter.

Spoiler alert:

It won't take many ? if any ? votes to determine which presidential candidate wins Utah or Rhode Island. Obama is not contesting Utah, where Republicans have won every presidential election since 1964, and Romney is making little effort in Rhode Island, traditionally a Democratic stronghold.

For races that are more competitive, analysts may use vote tallies from the randomly selected voting precincts to supplement data from the exit polls. The voting precincts are chosen at random, based on the same statistical models that pollsters use when they randomly choose people to answer surveys.

Workers report these vote totals soon after the polls close, giving analysts a relatively quick look at how the election is shaping up in that state.

For races that are even more competitive, news organizations rely on the AP vote count, the only national source of election results in all U.S counties and other vote-reporting jurisdictions.

As votes are tallied, analysts use statistical models to help project the winners. The models compare current votes in a race with results from previous elections.

Is Obama doing as well in central Ohio as he did on 2008? Is Romney doing better than John McCain did in the Cleveland area?

The closest races will come down to a county-by-county analysis of the remaining votes. If Romney is ahead in Ohio, are there enough votes left to be counted in Democratic-leaning counties for Obama to catch him? And what about the votes that don't get counted until after Election Day?

In 2008, nearly 12 percent of the votes in Ohio were counted after Election Day. Among them were 207,000 provisional ballots cast by people who weren't allowed to cast regular ballots because their names didn't show up on voter rolls or they had moved without updating their voter registrations. Ultimately, 81 percent of the provisional ballots in Ohio were counted in 2008.

Ohio's provisional ballots didn't affect the outcome of the presidential election in 2008 because Obama beat McCain by a relatively comfortable margin. But what if this year's presidential election comes down to Ohio ? again ? and there are fewer than 200,000 votes separating Obama and Romney?

It might take a few weeks to figure out who won the White House, after all.

It's not a big secret that I'm a huge fan of the Mophie line of smartphone?battery cases???I rarely travel without one tucked into my bag, after all. Naturally I was excited to hear that there is now a Mophie Juice Pack designed for the Samsung?Galaxy S3.

Unfortunately the case is somewhat bulky and spoils the Android device's rather slim looks.

Of course, this same issue existed with the very first iPhone-compatible Mophie cases as well and most?? yours truly?? had no issues sucking it up and compromising slenderness for longer battery life. (A Mophie case basically doubles a device's regular battery life.)

The Mophie Juice Pack for the Samsung Galaxy S3 is now available for $100. It, unsurprisingly, comes with a micro-USB cable.

The status of official CableCARD tuner support for Windows 8

With the official launch of Windows 8 comes the official support of premium cable content via one of the various CableCARD tuners originally designed for Windows 7 Media Center. Silicon Dust is at the front of the pack as Media Center on Windows 8 is already officially supported and the documentation is available for both the HDHomeRun Prime as well as the ATSC or QAM HDHomeRun. The only feature we noticed was not supported for now, is WMC Sync. Ceton is still working on the official driver for its InfiniTV 4, but reassures us that the Windows 7 driver "does work relatively well," although, is unsupported -- the real loss here is that there are no plans to bring the InfiniTV tuner sharing feature to Windows 8. Last up is Hauppauge, who doesn't have a single mention of support of Windows 8 for the WinTV-DCR-2650 on its site (we reached out to them, will update once we hear back). Of course, support by Media Center and Windows 8 is one thing, but we're really waiting for a mention that any "Windows Store Apps" that can play nicely with all this premium HD content.

Water Accounts for 12.6 Percent of U.S. Energy Consumption: Report

A team of researchers from the University of Texas at Austin has released a detailed report on energy use in pumping, treating, delivering, and preparing water for end use makes up no less than 12.6 percent of the nation?s total annual energy consumption is devoted to the task.

Published in September?s issue of Environmental Research Letters, a peer-reviewed scientific journal of the highest standing, the report details the investigation conducted by the team as they traced water from its source to the taps of average American households and back again. The study focused on each aspect of water delivery, including pumping from natural sources, building and maintaining reservoirs, treating the water for safety and then pumping it to individual residences and businesses, including those in the industrial sector. At its end, the study found that water treatment, delivery, and preparation (namely water heating) are among the most energy consumptive endeavors in the United States, requiring an amount of annual energy equivalent to the annual consumption of 40 million Americans. The sheer expense of maintaining and delivering fresh water serves to underscore just how precious that commodity is, potentially leading government policy towards saving water in the name of simultaneously saving energy.

?Energy and water security are achievable, and with careful planning, we can greatly reduce the amount of water used to produce energy, and the amount of energy used to provide and use water,? said Michael E. Webber, associate professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin and the director of this research project. ?In particular, our report shows that because there is so much energy embedded in water, saving water might be a cost-effective way to save energy.? Reactions to Gabrielle Union?s recent interview about baby and marriage fever with Just the Fab?garnered rather mixed responses on the site yesterday. Pleasantly, most people took Gabby?s hesitation to jump into marriage with Dwyane Wade due to past failed relationships at face value, supporting her choice to take things slow. Others, however, cried ?BS? and charged that were D. Wade to drop down on one knee today and attempt to put a ring on it, that hesitation would fly out the window and she would most certainly say ?yes.? Immediately I began wondering what?s the deal with women not being able to tell their truth about their own relationships?

What I find most funny about these reactions to Gabrielle?s feelings toward marriage is the juxtaposition of her approach to the media?s obsession with her relationship alongside singer Brandy?s. Plenty of people, myself included, have been critical of Brandy?s overzealous declarations that she is anxiously awaiting a proposal from her boyfriend, Ryan Press. Essentially, the reaction has been calm down before you?embarrass?yourself, but when a woman like Gabby basically says, ?Eh, we?re not in a rush. I?m enjoying where we are in our relationship right now? that?s problematic too and we assume she?s lying?

And let?s not forget Oprah Winfrey who has been in a relationship with Stedman since 1986 and endured this type of criticism for the longest. It wasn?t enough for Oprah to explain that she?s not the marrying kind ? because of course there is only?one type of woman in the world and she is definitely dying to be married ? no, the logical explanation for her not walking down the aisle is that she?s a lesbian and Stedman is just a cover. Really people?

None of us knows these celebrity couples personally and the truest truth about their relationships is that they don?t owe any of us an explanation about the?trajectory?of their partnerships. What?s unfortunate though is the same people who complain about being hounded by their family and friends about marriage and who have explanations on top of explanations for their current relationship status don?t extend the same ?we?re not all cut-from the same I-want-to-be-married-today cloth? courtesy they?re seeking from other people. How is it wrong for Brandy to want to be married, wrong (or an assumed lie)?that Gabby is waiting to be married, and wrong for Oprah to not want to be married? Are they not representative of who we are in actuality: diverse, contemporary woman with different relationship desires? And really, what other options are there outside of these other than it?s not legal for us to get married?

Obviously a lot of personal bias against these women plays into how their takes on relationships and marriage are perceived but at the end of the day we?re doing the same thing to them that?s done to us in the media and on a personal level all the time. Maybe we should just stop asking these women about the m-word period (like we request of other people) since their responses never satisfy us.
