Bo Xilai issue hangs over China's 18th Party Congress

BEIJING ? Bo Xilai could be the ultimate party pooper.

For the Chinese Communist Party, that is.

The 18th Party Congress in October will anoint the people who are to lead China through 2020. Yet even as police evict potential troublemakers from the city in preparation for the party's biggest event in a decade, it still hasn't dealt with the renegade politician whose wife was convicted last week of murder.

"They need to deal with him very fast. If they leave him in place, that won't be good for the upcoming generation of leadership," said Zhang Ming, a political scientist at People's University in Beijing.

The 62-year-old Bo has been stripped of his post as Chongqing Communist Party secretary, and he was kicked out of the 25-member Politburo in April for what were described as "serious disciplinary violations."

The government appears poised to remove him this week as a member of the National People's Congress, the Chinese equivalent of a parliament, during a five-day committee meeting that is supposed to conclude Friday. According to the congress' website, the meeting will deal with "personnel changes" and "legal matters"; political analysts believe that is code for Bo.

"It is definitely a signal that they are about to deal with Bo's fate," said Chen Ziming, an analyst and former political prisoner. Chen believes that Bo also will be expelled from the Communist Party. "One hundred percent, they have got to get rid of him."

At the upcoming 18th Party Congress, Vice President Xi Jinping is to be named to replace President Hu Jintao, and Vice Premier Li Keqiang to replace Wen Jiabao. It is likely to be a carefully scripted affair, with any unpredictable, spontaneous or indecorous element banished by a leadership that boasts of the "harmony" of its governance.

But it is not easy to stage a vanishing act with a larger-than-life character like Bo.

Bo's folksy campaigns in Chongqing to root out corruption and to revive the singing of revolutionary ballads won admiration from those who believe that China has veered too far toward free-market capitalism. Many saw him as the latter-day embodiment of Mao Tse-tung.

"Bo Xilai was the only one brave enough to confront the challenges we face in China, such as the growing gap between rich and poor," said Han Deqiang, a left-wing economist and one of Bo's most outspoken supporters. "He was one of the few who had ideas that could prevent China from disintegrating like the USSR.''

Since Bo's downfall in March, Chinese censors have blocked leftist websites and arrested the few supporters brave enough to take to the streets.

"They didn't even get a chance to put out banners or say anything before they were taken away," said Wang Zheng, an economics professor who tried to organize a pro-Bo demonstration in May at Tiananmen Square.

Still, small demonstrations pop up from time to time.

Chanting "Long live Chairman Mao," die-hard supporters demonstrated outside the courthouse in Hefei in Anhui province, where Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, stood trial this month. Supporters last month gathered 1,644 signatures on a petition on the Red China website calling for Bo's rehabilitation and the removal of current leaders.

Sima Nan, a Maoist intellectual, said Bo's supporters are limited in how the express themselves.

"If you go to the Internet, you'll be blocked. If you go on the streets, you'll be arrested," Sima said. "But that doesn't mean this case will be quickly resolved. Bo has become a martyr and an icon for what many people believe."

Bo's supporters also continued to swirl a persistent conspiracy theory that the murder charges against Gu Kailai were fabricated to keep Bo out of political power. Although Chinese television aired a snippet of the court proceedings Aug. 9 in which Gu confessed, skeptics claim that the woman shown in the courtroom (who appeared much larger and less attractive than previous photographs of Bo's wife) was actually someone else.

"This whole trial was a fake. The woman in court wasn't even Gu Kailai," said Wang, the professor who wrote a blog on the trial.

Bo has not been accused of complicity in the murder, although some reports leaked to Chinese media suggest that he ordered a coverup after learning of his wife's involvement. The evidence also suggests that the victim, Neil Heywood, was involved in real estate projects with Bo's family and was helping them send money out of China, in violation of currency controls.

Until his downfall, Bo was a contender for the upper echelon of leadership. He was thought likely to get the nod as Communist Party secretary for either Beijing or Shanghai, if not a spot on the nine-member Standing Committee of the Politburo.

His glad-handing, telegenic style made him more like an American politician than a dour Chinese cadre; he was one of the few leadership figures regularly photographed smiling. Elsewhere, in fact, he might have been the life of the party. But not in China.

"Bo is the only one who could come out and make a fight on the political stage. That's why he was viewed as a big threat. Hu Jintao just wants to keep everything quiet," said Li Datong, a former Communist Party editor and political analyst.

In keeping with its customary secrecy, the Chinese leadership has not yet announced a date for the 18th Party Congress. But mid-October is considered most likely, and the usual signs of preparations are underway.

Special units of armed police are training in Shanxi province to provide security and organize neighborhood watch volunteers with red armbands to patrol intersections. Potential troublemakers, such as the petitioners who regularly come to Beijing to present their grievances, are being rounded up and sent back to their hometowns.

As for Bo, he is believed to be held in a government guest house under a uniquely Communist Party form of extrajudicial detention known as shuanggui, which is reserved for officials. Under the system, the official is usually kept incommunicado from family, friends, supporters and even lawyers.

In recent months, Bo's name has been out of the Chinese state media, and he was barely mentioned in Gu's trial. So, for the moment, he remains out of sight but not out of mind.

Study: Low-Calorie Diets Don't Boost Longevity - Food Product Design

BETHESDA, Md.?A new study conducted by scientists at the National Institute on Aging (NIA) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) suggests following a calorie-restricted diet may not prolong longevity or reduce age-related deaths as previously thought.

The study, published in the journal Nature, concluded calorie restriction does not extend years of life or reduce age-related deaths in a 23-year study of rhesus monkeys; however, calorie restriction does extend certain aspects of health.

The survival results in the study reported today by NIA researchers differ from those published in 2009 by NIA-supported investigators at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Wisconsin study followed two groups of rhesus monkeys for 20 years and found that monkeys on a calorie-restricted diet lived longer than those on a standard diet.

Beyond longevity, the parallel NIA and Wisconsin studies have reported similar beneficial health effects of calorie-restriction. Both studies found that certain age-related diseases, including diabetes, arthritis, diverticulosis and cardiovascular problems, occurred at an earlier age in monkeys on the standard diet compared to those on calorie restriction. However, this observation was not statistically significant in the NIA study. NIA researchers did find that monkeys started on calorie restriction at an early age had a statistically significant reduction in cancer incidence.

The researchers also found that while calorie restriction had a beneficial effect on several measures of metabolic health and function in monkeys who were started on the special diet regimen during old age (16 to 23 years), it did not have the same positive outcome for monkeys started on calorie restriction at a young age (less than 14 years). In the Wisconsin study, all the monkeys were 7 to 14 years when started on calorie restriction.

"These results suggest the complexity of how calorie restriction may work in the body," said NIA Director Richard J. Hodes, M.D. "Calorie restriction?s effects likely depend on a variety of factors, including environment, nutritional components and genetics."

Differences in the monkeys' meal and other nutritional factors were cited as possible explanations for NIA?s and Wisconsin?s different outcomes. Both studies used a similar percentage of calorie restriction with their intervention groups; however, the Wisconsin monkeys in both the calorie restricted and control groups were eating more and weighed more than the matched NIA monkeys.

NIA's food had a natural ingredient base, while Wisconsin opted for a purified diet. Purified diets generally lack trace dietary chemicals and minerals that could affect an animal?s health. Each ingredient of a purified diet provides a specific nutrient and minerals or vitamins must be added separately. Natural-ingredient diets have risk of variation between batches, but are considered by some to be more complete than purified diets. NIA and Wisconsin also used different sources for proteins, fat and carbohydrates, as well as different approaches to vitamin and mineral supplementation.

How Google reworked Android to step around Apple?s deadly ?915 patent

Apple Patent Analysis

One of the patents Apple (AAPL) successfully asserted in its case against Samsung (005930) caused some alarm in the tech media earlier this week when tech reporters mistakenly believed that it encompassed every single type of ?pinch-to-zoom? touchscreen technology. But as The Verge?explains, Apple?s ?915 patent ? the so-called pinch-to-zoom patent ? is actually fairly limited in scope and has reportedly already been worked around by Google (GOOG) with its latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean software update.

The site says that the ?915 patent ?specifically covers a programming interface which detects if one finger on a screen is scrolling or two or more fingers are doing something else? and is definitively not a broad patent for pinch-to-zoom technology. Most crucially for Android manufacturers, Google has designed around the ?915 patent by ?allowing you to always pan around in multiple directions with one finger, whereas Mobile Safari in iOS generally locks you to a one-dimensional scroll when you start moving with one finger.?

The bottom line is that while the Apple v. Samsung verdict may force some significant redesigns on the part of some smartphone hardware and software, it won?t impose tyrannical restrictions on rival operating systems that will prevent them from using pinch-to-zoom?or other standard smartphone features.

Jersey Shore Cancelled!

It is the end of an era, Jersey Shore has been cancelled. Yep MTV has pulled the plug on the show that became an instant cult hit but don?t worry I have a feeling the cast members are not going anywhere. The upcoming sixth season of The Jersey Shore will be the last season for ?Nicole ?Snooki? Polizzi, Mike ?The Situation? Sorrentino, Paul “Pauly D” DelVecchio, Deena Cortese, ?Jennifer ?JWoww ?Farley, Sammi “Sweetheart” Giancola, ?Ronnie Ortiz-Magro and Vinny Guadagnino. Wowza try saying those names all at once that is a mouth full. Anyway the gang has gone their separate ways and MTV will not be bringing them back together for a seventh season. In case you are not aware the final season will begin airing on October 4th. MTV broke the news today that the show is dunzo but I personally was not surprised at all that it got cancelled. I mean I don?t even know how good the upcoming season is going to be considering that during filming Snooki was preggers and living in a separate house than the others. The Situation was also living in a separate house to keep him on track with his sobriety. Those two [...]

Bowling a Sport?

Bowling a Sport?

See Jim Gaffin?s take?

Is bowling a sport, recreation or business? Yes! By Mark Miller

Republished courtesy of Examiner.com (July 16, 2010)

20100717SeanRashatIBE2010.jpgThe age-old question of whether bowling is a sport, recreation or business may finally have been definitively answered June 27-July 1 at International Bowl Expo 2010 in Las Vegas.

Pro bowler Sean Rash (left) was part of the mix of sport and business at International Bowl Expo. Photo Mark Miller

After years of arguing that it had to be one or the other, it was apparent to the thousands in attendance that bowling indeed is all of them together. And that seemed okay to the many experts there.

?We promote bowling as a sport, entertainment and business,? Brunswick President of Bowling Products Brent Perrier told the Bowling Writers? Association of America. ?It?s all three.?

While it?s clear bowling is a sport at the Professional Bowlers Association, collegiate, high school and Junior Gold levels, the line becomes a bit foggy beyond that. Even league bowlers associated with the United States Bowling Congress consider themselves to be recreational as often as competitive.

?The sport of bowling is evolving, spreading out if you will,? USBC Managing Director of Media Pete Tredwell said during a BWAA panel discussion where the question was asked if bowling is becoming more entertainment than sport. ?The purest level is PBA which is separating from the league and recreational base.?

?If you want to be a successful sport on TV, it has to be entertaining,? said Professional Bowlers Association Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer Tom Clark. ?A taped series, a made for TV event, is that a sport? The Chris Paul event was a made-for-TV event but they were playing our sport.?

?We as bowlers are sensitive to anything that we think demeans our sport,? said Las Vegas Review-Journal sportswriter and bowling columnist Jeff Wolf. ?We get sensitive because we are slighted so often.?

?To me, sport is entertainment,? said Bowlers Journal Executive Editor Jim Dressel.

So with all the talk about the sport, recreation and business of bowling all being good, where does the industry go from here? At Strike Zone at Sunset Station in Henderson, Nev., it?s a little bit of everything.

?Our property is so big we can do both the sport and recreation of bowling,? said Jim Welch, general manager of the 72-lane facility. ?We can have a birthday party on one end and a tournament on the other. Sometimes we?ve done the ultimate multitasking. We?ll have five different events going at the same time.?

That?s a good mix according to retired USBC Chief Executive Officer and author Roger Dalkin who said he noticed a subtle move toward more entertainment-based exhibitors at the Bowl Expo Trade Show.

?The industry has to be careful that it doesn?t go too much entertainment because then you are dealing with people who go on a whim,? Dalkin said. ?Look at the Main Event places in Texas. They never had a league when they opened and now they are starting to look for leagues.?

As Disney?s Mike Reardon said in the Disney Institute?s Approach to Business Excellence seminar, people no longer are coming to bowling centers just to bowl.

?Walt Disney told us, and it?s still true today that recreation and entertainment are not luxuries in this society or people will go nuts,? Reardon said. ?Look for ways to expand what you already do and who you are.?

By that definition, centers that combine the sport, recreation and business of bowling should be able succeed quite well.

Martin Bickman on the Needless War Between Traditionalists and

Some blog followers might be interested in a recent discussion-list post ?Martin Bickman on the Needless War Between Traditionalists and Progressives? [Hake (2012)]. The abstract reads:

**************************************************
ABSTRACT: University of Colorado English Professor Martin Bickman at his website http://bit.ly/MUXUgx states (paraphrasing): ?While my book Minding American Education [Bickman (2003)], see http://bit.ly/OSYLdc, won a national academic award, I soon discovered that meaningful educational change happens primarily at the local levels, working student to student and teacher to teacher.?

Bickman drew from his book in a piece in the Los Angeles Times which he had meaningfully titled ?The Needless War Between Traditionalists And Progressives And How To End It,? but which was changed by an editor to the snappy but senseless ?Won't You Come Home John Dewey?? [Bickman (2004) at http://bit.ly/OF7DWF - scroll to the APPENDIX]. Therein Bickman wrote [paraphrased for brevity; bracketed by lines ?bbbbb. . . . .?):

bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb
One of the reasons this continuing conflict between traditionalists and progressives is so heartbreaking is that, around the turn of the last century, John Dewey was able to create resolutions both in a philosophic and practical sense. He looked out on an educational landscape torn between similar apparently competing philosophies:

(a) that centered on the notion of ?child-study? and the person of G. Stanley Hall http://bit.ly/NBfLEK, with a Rousseau-like sentimentality about nature and children, more concerned with what it saw as health and wholeness than with intellectual growth; and

(b) that centered on high academic achievement as defined and organized by curricula and textbooks, led by William Torrey Harris http://bit.ly/OoqXag, more concerned with the standard curriculum - arithmetic, geography, history, grammar and literature - the ?five windows of the soul,? as Harris called them - that rescued the young mind from its immediate narrowness.

Instead of enlisting on one side or the other, Dewey in a crucial 1902 article, ?The Child and the Curriculum? at http://bit.ly/QsVuHi, conceptualized each position so that it would no longer seem a matter of the child versus the curriculum. [My italics.]

?Education must be conceived as a continuing reconstruction of experience; that the process and the goal of education are one and the same thing.. . . .[[page 434]]. . . . [It does not mean, as it is often misunderstood,] that we have no choice save either to leave the child to his own unguided spontaneity or to inspire direction upon him from without. But [it recognizes] that no such thing as. . . . . insertion of truth from without is possible. All depends upon the activity which the mind itself undergoes in responding to what is presented from without.. . . . [[page 357]]. . . .?
- John Dewey (1974) - as quoted by Ansbacher (2000)

?. . . .there are several ways to distinguish those who advocate a concept-driven reform curriculum from those who remain defenders of a skills-oriented traditional curriculum. . . . . .They represent different value systems. I believe that rational, reflective discussion and exploration of these issues can bring the two sides closer together. . . . . . . I am told that California schools educate one-seventh of the students in this country. There is too much at stake to continue the fighting, to take a chance on sacrificing the mathematical education of our children by not reaching some agreement on what that education should be.?
- Judith Sowder (1998)

?An exclusive focus on basics leaves students without the understandings that enable them to use effectively. A focus on 'process' without attention to skills deprives students of the tools they need for fluid, competent performance. The extremes are untenable. So, why have so many people taken extreme positions, and why are things as polarized as they are? More important, what might be done about it?. . . . . . . I remain convinced that there is a large middle ground. . . . . . .One way to reclaim the middle ground, suggested by Phil Daro (2007), is to define it clearly-to specify a set of propositions that will call for some degree of compromise from reformers and traditionalists alike. That middle ground would be broadly encompassing, containing propositions that most people would find reasonable (or at least livable). The short-term goal . . . must be to capture the middle ground for the majority. Efforts must be made publicly to identify the extremists for what they are and to marginalize them. The math wars have casualties-our children, who do not receive the kind of robust mathematics education they should.?

College Communications Checklist | Gotta Have My Mobile

As a recent college grad, I learned a great deal in my four years away from home. For the first time, I was balancing homework with a more robust social schedule, trying to stay connected with old friends now in different states, keeping my parents informed but also learning about independence. Some of these lessons I learned the easy way, while others I learned the hard way. You live, you learn, you do better next time, right?

I found that smart use of the technology I had available to me and some common sense went a long way toward making college life easier and avoiding some of the problems that confront so many new students. So before your new college students hit the road, check out a few of the basics I gleaned outside the classroom.

1. Review your phone?s data plan

Before you leave home, make sure to understand everything your cell phone plan includes. Do you have unlimited talk and text, or set restrictions? Do you have nationwide calling, or will roaming charges cut your talk time short?

This was not something my family and I did, and I remember a conversation with my dad mid-October about how I was running up our cell phone bill calling my friends at schools in different states (whoops!). So do yourself, and your family, a favor and make sure you have the plan and device that?s right for you before heading off to school.

2. Organization is key

You know how important it is to keep all your pictures, videos, music and contacts on your phone organized, and it?s the same way in your new dorm room too! Freshman year, my room had two outlets, and one was unreachable behind our fridge. This meant everything my roommate and I used: phone charger, lamps, curling irons, TV, computer chargers, hair dryers and microwave had to fit into one outlet. One! So we invested in surge protectors. Command hooks and Velcro tape helped consolidate wires and keep the mess contained behind our desks- out of sight, out of mind, right?

We also learned ways to consolidate certain functions, like using my phone as an alarm and playing music from your laptop instead of a separate set of speakers. Your dorm room won?t be big enough to house the heavy duty speakers you used to rock out at home.

3. Is your campus wireless?

Before heading off to your first day of class, you?ll want to find out if your campus has wireless internet access. You can usually find this information by searching ?IT Services? on your school?s website. I was fortunate in that my school was completely wireless, so I could jump online in class, outside in the quad, and in my dorm. This meant I could use my wireless printer and laptop without additional Ethernet cords! Plus, I could work anywhere I wanted if the library was too crowded.

If you decide to bring your own printer to school, my advice is to buy your replacement ink and paper in bulk before you leave. It will be cheaper, and you?ll avoid the 2 am panic attack when you realize you?re out of ink but still need to print off that term paper. I?ve been there. Not fun.

4. Smart Students Use Smart Apps

In college, you?ll find you?re always on the go, so it?s important to maximize the things you carry with you everywhere- like your phone! Here are some must have apps every college student needs:

  1. iStudies Pro:?Instead of carrying a bulky planner to all your classes, why not organize yourself on your phone? You have it with you anyways, and it allows you to keep everything in one place- even a reminder for that ?study date? with your cute lab partner Tuesday night (as if you need a reminder!). No matter what, this app makes sure you are always on your game.
  2. Evernote:?Ditch the heavy notebooks you used to take notes with in high school and use your laptop instead. You can keep everything neat and organized during class, then easily move all your notes to the cloud, where you can access them anywhere. This app is also great for safely storing passwords, bike lock combinations and more!
  3. Mobile Security App:?You may not realize it, but your phone houses a ton of information. Just think of all your contacts, pictures, videos and even financial information you use for online banking or shopping from your cell. Now imagine losing all of that.? Nightmare! Be smart and protect your stuff. Most phone carriers offer security apps for free or for a low monthly rate, that can back up all your information and alert you at the first sign of malware on your phone. No matter which app you decide on, the peace of mind knowing your stuff is protected is well worth it!
  4. Maps: I am the world?s worst with directions, so driving 325 miles home for Thanksgiving break my freshman year was quite a daunting task. My Maps app totally came to the rescue though and navigated me home safely. This app was also great in helping me learn my way around a new college town. It showed where to find the best restaurants, the grocery store, and the movie theatre- helping me feel at home right away.

The ?Essentials? College Packing list:

If nothing else, make sure you packed these key things before pulling out of the driveway on move-in day:

  • Phone Charger-?I kept one in my bag at all times so I could recharge throughout the day if I was running low on battery.
  • External Hard Drive-?Make sure to back up all your notes, pictures and papers regularly on your external HD. You never know when you might accidentally spill that late night cup of coffee and fry your computer.
  • Headphones-?I never left home without them! They took up no space in my bag, and were great to drown out the sounds of a noisy roommate or chatty people ?studying? in the library.
  • Computer Case-?Your computer can really take a beating in your bag all day, so make sure to protect it with a sturdy case to ward off scratches, dents and damage.

Hopefully, now you feel more prepared to start your college experience off right. Following a few of these lessons will no doubt make sure you stay connected in college!

Opinion: Apple is victorious, Android is screwed, both RIM and Microsoft may be grateful

Apple is victorious Android is screwed

Apple?s recent patent victory over Samsung will leave other Android makers squirming, and open a window for struggling competitors like Microsoft and RIM.

In case you missed the news: Apple?s patent infringement lawsuit against Samsung is over. Cupertino walked home with a victory.

This was a big trial, and while it doesn?t necessarily indicate where the International Trade Commission (ITC) may fall on the same questions, the $1.05 billion judgment is high enough to hurt Samsung enough to change some behaviors.

Let?s chat about what this all means. Be aware that sides will likely appeal this judgment. Apple wanted far more money, and Samsung wanted money from Apple, too. My expectation is that this trial was well run, and the judgment is likely to stand, but appeals may delay the visible impact depending on how much risk Samsung and the other Android phone makers want to take on.

Google licensees are screwed

Samsung was really a proxy for most of the other Android licensees, and you can be sure Apple will use this judgment as a cookie cutter for similar settlements with the other phone makers. That?s the way this works, and it means Google?s late defense with Motorola wasn?t adequate. This happens late enough in the fourth quarter that no one will have the time to make critical changes to infringing phones, and since damages are based on what?s sold, many may have to pull their phones off them market in order to minimize the later judgment.

Beneficiaries

Clearly Apple is the big winner here, but so are Nokia and Microsoft. Had RIM refreshed its platform in time, it could have been a winner as well, but this ruling will largely affect the fourth quarter, particularly for tablets; RIM won?t have its new products in market until next quarter, so it may nearly miss this wave. Microsoft and Nokia, however, are indemnified through Apple cross licenses thanks to Microsoft. With some Android phone builders pulling back from the US market, they may find themselves in a far better position than otherwise would have been the case.

Windows 8 Tablets (particularly the RT version that runs on ARM) will be stronger positioned against the iPad, since the number of competing Android products will be reduced. Microsoft?s ability to indemnify its licensees from this kind of a problem suddenly became worth the price of admission.

RIM sale

Research in Motion has the only available patent portfolio in play that may match Apple?s. RIM has been positioning for a sale, and this judgment may now make that portfolio even more desirable as a hedge against Apple going forward. Both Samsung and Google will be very interested in this property, and Microsoft or Apple might bid for it in order to keep either of them from getting it. Suddenly, RIM may be the most popular girl at the dance, at least from the standpoint of being acquired.

Google

Google may have to rethink its model. In effect, Steve Jobs? accusation that Google stole from Apple has been upheld by a jury. Being found guilty (granted through Samsung as a proxy) of stealing from a firm you were on the board of and whose CEO was mentoring your founders has deep ethical implications. You?d better believe this will be used in subsequent trials to showcase Google using dishonesty as a practice. Google should likely do some soul searching, but the long-term implications of these findings could haunt Google for decades, and likely should.

Steve Jobs: Vindicated from the grave

In the end, this is posthumous validation for Steve Jobs? anger at Google and Samsung?s betrayal. Both firms were partners of Apple: Google was on Apple?s board and Samsung was a preferred supplier. This trial showcased that neither firm acted appropriately, and I imagine other partners of both firms are now looking at them differently this week. Google had this policy of not being evil; well a jury of nine just voted that this policy isn?t working particularly well. Maybe they should take it to heart.

In the end, this one decision just rocked the technology world; we likely won?t be able to assess the full impact until after the end of next quarter. But I can say this: What we see coming to market will now be vastly different than it would have been, and the market winners and losers will be vastly different. I suspect Bill Gates will toast and quietly thank his old partner and competitor tonight for carrying the ball this one last time.

Great Books for Kids and Teens: Teen/YA Review: The Unbearable ...

I requested a review copy of The Unbearable Book Club for Unsinkable Girls by Julie Schumacher simply because the author is from Delaware and the novel is set here as well, a rarity given that I live in the second-smallest state in the US (such is the low profile of our tiny state that one reviewer on Amazon incorrectly stated that this book takes place in Maryland - we are here, guys, right next door!)? I didn?t have many expectations for the book, but I was pleasantly surprised ? I ended up loving this unique, realistic novel for teens.

Sixteen-year old Adrienne Haus knows this will be the worst summer ever.? Because of a serious knee injury, she is left at home while her best friend (well, her only friend) goes off to camp without her.? To make matters worse, her mother came up with the brilliant idea to have a mother-daughter summer book club, to help Adrienne and a few of her classmates do their required reading and get ready for their AP English class in the fall.

It is a disparate group of girls thrown together in this involuntary book club; the only thing they have in common is that none of them (except Wallis) wants to be in it, as explained on the back cover:

??But we weren?t friends.? We were not a sisterhood, and we didn?t share any pants.? We were literary prisoners, sweating and reading classics and hanging out at the pool.? But, of course, that?s not the whole story. ?

The book is written as Adrienne?s summer AP English assignment, with different chapters addressing not only the books read but what happened to the girls in between.? I just loved the unique approach, and the fact that the novel is not at all what you would expect.? The girls don?t fit easily into stereotypes and they don't all become best friends or learn to love literature.? The characters feel like real people, with plenty of real problems that are not easily solved.? Their summer reading parallels the course of everything else they go through that summer, and the girls grow and learn a lot about themselves and each other.? In fact, the book inspired me; I would like to read some of the books the girls in the novel read during their unbearable summer.? I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel and look forward to reading more from Schumacher.

How to Prevent Common Inner Ear Problems

tinnitusmiracleusers thumb

Sadly, many inner ear problems cannot be successfully treated. For instance, presbycusis or Meniere?s disease cannot be cured but can only be addressed through alleviating techniques. Many cases of inner ear disorders can be prevented though.

1. Avoiding loud noise is the best way to avoid noise-induced hearing loss, whose number of cases has been rising in years. There is no denying that exposure to loud noise is, indeed, the reason why many people succumb to loss of hearing at some point in their lives. Damage to the delicate hair cells in the cochlea is the result of too much exposure to noise. The damage cannot be repaired-damaged hair cells don?t heal themselves. As a result, noise-induced hearing loss is incurable. Experts also believe that age-related hearing loss may also be due to cumulative noise exposure.

2. Stop using hydrogen peroxide to remove earwax or cure infection in the ears. Studies have shown that this compound can affect the function of the inner ear and may even damage it. Go to your doctor for proper treatment of earwax impaction or ear infection. Do not self medicate.

3. Learn that some medications can cause inner ear problems. These drugs are called ototoxic medications. NSAIDs, some chemotherapy drugs, loop diuretics, and some antibiotics have been classified as ototoxic. They cause gradual damage to the ears and may make one suffer from tinnitus and hearing loss in the long run. Report to your doctor any loss of hearing or perception of tinnitus after taking a medication. Excessive dependence on ototoxic drugs may cause permanent hearing damage according to doctors.

4. Go to your doctor if you notice changes in your hearing, if you think your hearing has become muffled, and if people complain that you are turning the television too loud for them. You might have developed mild hearing loss. If you work in noisy factories, have your hearing assessed every year.

5. Give your ears a rest! If you have spent several days staying in disco pubs or listening to loud music, you have to spend a good time being in a low noise environment. This allows your ears to recover from the strain of constant loud noise exposure.

6. Vertigo is a common symptom of vestibular disorders. If you frequently suffer from bouts of dizziness or vertigo, set an appointment with your doctor. Tinnitus is another common symptom of inner ear problems, such as hearing loss, so do not hesitate to go to an audiologist for hearing assessment. Many people with tinnitus have hearing loss, so opt for hearing assessment if you have tinnitus.

Do you know that 95% of people fail to cure tinnitus even with expensive medicational methods? Hopefully I've found a way to gain dramatically relief in less than 7 days. It has never been publicly revealed before. To find out what it is visit the most popular tinnitus treatment here

Occupy Wall Street protesters seek to block Twitter subpoena

5 hrs.

NEW YORK -- An Occupy Wall Street protester who took part in a mass protest in New York last year is accusing a judge of overstepping his authority by ordering Twitter to hand over the demonstrator's tweets and account information to prosecutors.

Malcolm Harris, a Brooklyn-based writer, filed a civil proceeding on Monday seeking to block the judge's ruling.

Harris was arrested during a protest on the Brooklyn Bridge last October and charged with disorderly conduct in a case that is one of a handful in which authorities have sought to use social media to prosecute defendants.

Criminal Court Judge Matthew Sciarrino has rebuffed separate attempts by Harris and Twitter to quash a subpoena served on the company by the Manhattan district attorney's office seeking Harris' tweets for September to December.

Harris claims the information sought by prosecutors is akin to surveillance records, because computer logs will show his location when he connected to the site.

"In this case, anyone reviewing the information and material Twitter has been ordered to turn over will know each time - between September 15 and December 30, 2011 -- Harris logged into his Twitter account, where he was when he logged in, how long he remained there and both what he did and who he communicated with while he was logged in," Harris' lawyers wrote in a memorandum accompanying the petition.

Prosecutors from the Manhattan district attorney's office have said in court papers that Harris' tweets could demonstrate he knew police had ordered protesters not to walk onto the bridge roadway.

Harris' lawyer, Martin Stolar of the National Lawyers Guild, and other lawyers for the arrested protesters have said police appeared to lead the march onto the roadway before suddenly arresting hundreds of them.

Sciarrino ruled in April that Harris did not have the standing to challenge the subpoena, since Twitter owned his tweets. In June, he rejected Twitter's argument that turning over the tweets violated Harris' privacy and free speech rights, saying the tweets were publicly posted without any expectation of privacy.

Twitter has filed a separate notice of appeal, though it has not yet submitted its formal brief.

Criminal defendants typically are required to wait until the end of criminal proceedings before filing appeals. But Stolar said Sciarrino's ruling threatened Harris' privacy and required an immediate response.

Harris' filing also seeks an order requiring Sciarrino to recognize his standing to challenge the subpoena on free speech grounds and the Fourth Amendment's protection against warrantless searches.

The Manhattan district attorney's office declined to comment on the filing.

'Alzheimer protein' seems to slow down neurotransmitter production

RUB researchers analyze proteome of cells

How abnormal protein deposits in the brains of Alzheimer's patients disrupt the signalling between nerve cells has now been reported by researchers in Bochum and Munich, led by Dr. Thorsten Mller from the Medizinisches Proteom-Center of the Ruhr-Universitt, in the journal Molecular and Cellular Proteomics. They varied the amount of APP protein and related proteins associated with Alzheimer's disease in cell cultures, and then analysed how this manipulation affected other proteins in the cell. The result: the amount of APP present was related to the amount of an enzyme that is essential for the production of neurotransmitters and therefore for communication amongst nerve cells.

Proteomics: analysing all the proteins of the cells at once

Amyloid plaques are a characteristic feature of Alzheimer's disease. They consist largely of cleavage products of the so-called amyloid precursor protein APP, which occur in excess in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. What role APP plays in healthy people and why the abnormal accumulation of amyloid disrupts the regular functioning of the brain is still largely unclear. To understand the function of APP, the RUB researchers established a new cell model. The new cells produced only a very small amount of APP. What impact this had on all the other proteins of these cells was examined by the researchers through the use of mass spectrometry, among other things. With this method they identified over 2000 proteins and determined their concentrations. They were looking specifically for molecules whose concentrations in the newly established low-APP cells were different than in the reference cells that contained normal amounts of APP.

Abnormal protein able to curb neurotransmitter production

"One candidate has particularly caught our attention, this being the enzyme methionine adenosyltransferase II, alpha, MAT2A for short", Thorsten Mller said. Among other things, the enzyme is crucially involved in the production of neurotransmitters. Low-APP cells contained less MAT2A than the reference cells. To confirm the connection between the "Alzheimer's protein" APP and the neurotransmitter-producing MAT2A, the team studied tissue samples from the brains of deceased Alzheimer's patients and from healthy individuals. In the tissue of the Alzheimer's patients there was less MAT2A than in the healthy samples. These results suggest that APP and MAT2A concentrations are related and are linked to the synthesis of neurotransmitters. "Our results point to a new mechanism by which the defective cleavage of the APP protein in Alzheimer's disease could be directly related to altered neurotransmitter production", Mller said. "As a result, the signal transduction of nerve cells could be disrupted, which, over an extended period, could possibly also cause the death of cells."

Banks in Vietnam lack social risk management ? TalkVietnam

Almost all of the banks operating in Vietnam have lacked official policies and systems to manage environmental and social risks of their customers, according to a recent survey.

The survey was conducted in June at 54 credit organisations operating in Vietnam by the International Financial Corporation (IFC) in Vietnam and the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV).

It showed that one of the main obstacles to initiating policies on social and environmental risk is the lack of the sector?s specific guidance on environmental and social risk management in credit activities.

Almost all of the banks needed to apply better norms on environmental and social risk assessment for businesses? loans to improve sustainability of projects, it said.

According to Simon Andrews, IMF Regional Manager in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand, managing sustainable development of environment and social issues will bring new business opportunities to banks, such as support for energy saving and recycled energy.

Cat Quang Duong from the SBV said that the central bank is willing to cooperate with the IFC to promote the sector?s environmental and social risk management.

He said the survey indicated almost all banks are not aware of impacts from environmental and social risks on their business.

Cooperating with the SBV to improve environmental and social risk management in the banking sector is an activity in the IFC?s advisory services programme in order to promote sustainable growth in Vietnam.-VNA

Search For Parkinson's Genes Turns To Online Social Networking ...

There's a growing interest in what our genes say about our health. And in recent years, quite a few companies have sprung up to help us listen with the help of personalized DNA tests.

For a few hundred dollars and a vial of spit, these companies will search your DNA for sequences that predict your physical traits, your response to certain drugs and your risk for any number of diseases.

One such company, California-based 23andMe, is attempting to use the data to do something different: search for new genes linked to Parkinson's disease. The company, which calls itself the world's first genetics-based social network, has collected more than 125,000 DNA samples from customers.

Most customers likely wanted to find out more about their personal genetic risks ? not to contribute to medical science. But in 2009, the company decided to do genetic research, and it invited anyone diagnosed with Parkinson's disease to donate their DNA sample.

23andMe recruited people online using social media, and at Parkinson's research conferences. In exchange for participating, they're offered the company's personalized genetics services free. Participants provided a DNA sample and answered questions about their diagnosis, symptoms and lifestyle habits in online surveys.

"They may in theory be able to involve 10,000 people with Parkinson's disease, and do it cheaply and easily," explains Hank Greely, a Stanford Law School professor who follows genetics companies. "Now that's something that academic researchers would love to be able to do."

In the past, researchers looked at families with many members who had the disease, allowing them to zero in on single genes that would dramatically increase a person's risk of getting Parkinson's. But of the million or so people in the U.S. with Parkinson's disease, less than 10 percent have any of the genes discovered so far.

Researchers think that's because there are many genes involved in Parkinson's ? but that their effects are too small to be seen in just a few hundred to a few thousand people. Emily Drabant, research director at 23andMe, hopes that by looking at many thousands of people, they may be able to find them.

"We know that there are many genes, so the idea is when you aggregate across many thousands of people you can start to see genes that have perhaps a small effect on risk for Parkinson's," she says. "Perhaps, you have three or four risk variants and the combination increases your risk for Parkinson's quite significantly."

But observers like Greely say a dose of skepticism is in order. He wonders if 23andMe's customers will truly be representative of the population, and if the subjects can be trusted to accurately report their diagnosis and symptoms.

Criticism of direct-to-consumer genetics companies is nothing new. Many have questioned the ethics of delivering genetic information directly to the consumer, as well as the value and the accuracy of the genetic risks they report.

23andMe is now seeking FDA approval for its genetic testing kits. The company submitted applications for seven health-related tests so far and plans to include more than 100 more in the coming months.

When it comes to research, many also wonder if these companies will have incentives to report positive findings too soon. But Robert Green of Harvard Medical School says that companies with large profit incentives have been doing medical research for years, and while skepticism is in order, the controversial nature of these companies is not a reason to entirely discredit their approach to research.

"You know social media has changed the rest of our lives ? there's no reason why social media and the Internet can't revolutionize some aspects of medical research as well," he says. "I see this as part of a larger trend, not something that's really restricted to genetic testing companies."

23andMe has had considerable success. Though short of its goal, the company has discovered two new genes. Drabant says they have also been able to uncover rare combinations of mutated genes associated with Parkinson's that no one had found before.

Drabant says she recognizes an Internet-based approach to genetics research makes many scientists uncomfortable. It's something new. But she also says she believes companies like 23andMe have the power to make important genetic discoveries faster, and cheaper than has been done in the past. Given enough time and research subjects, she hopes to prove it.
