Why Can't I Lose Weight Thyroid | How Can You Lose Weight

?

Article by Rick Scott

Why am I having a hard time losing weght? It?s a problem which has been requested by many for a long time now. Many who tried dieting and exercise still have a lot of hard time getting slimmer. Many people are presently conscious that moving more and eating much less could be the tips for shedding pounds. If you think that you have done everything and you still won?t lose the fat, then its about time to get yourself checked to see if you have any medical condition that is not allowing you to lose fats. The signs and symptoms could be so subtle that even your medical service providers have overlooked all of them.

The thyroid glands is mainly responsible for making the hormones that dictate how your body utilizes and holds energy. Sluggish thyroid gland can slow down not only your metabolic process but can also slow down your weight loss. The condition is more common between women aged 40 to 50 years old. Sufferers not only experience weight gain but muscle weakness, depression, fatigue, hair loss, joint pain as well insensitivity to cold. Plenty of people who have low grade hypothyroidism usually do not feel signs and conditions of becoming sick. You need to have your hormones checked. An internist normally carries out a thyroid stimulating hormone testing test to determine a person?s thyroid levels. If you have actually pondered the question, ?Why can?t I lose weight regardless of all of the efforts??, then attribute it on the thyroid.

Weight gain can also be caused by some medicines like steroids, anti depressants and contraceptives. Birth control in particular can lead to a temporary boost of water preservation in the body. So if you noticed that you increased weight after using the pill then consider it as a side effect. You can find other people who show weight gain several weeks following their therapy. So ask you doctor for alternative medicines to lessen your weight gain.

One of the most common reasons why females are having difficulties slimming down is because not working hormones. There are studies that says that PCOS occurs to 1 out of 10 women. This is a condition where ovaries create too much levels of the male bodily hormones. People who have been suffering from PCOS may also be suffering from diabetes because of insulin resistance. Also, it is often connected with excess fat storage around the midsection. If ever these is neglected there is a big chance that it will cause a type 2 diabetes. Read on for more of the best PCOS treatment alternatives. So if you feel that you belly fat isn?t going away or? haunts you once again, get your hormones looked at and examined. You wil need to lessen you sugar and arbo intake, if your test results show that you insulin resistance.

If you have ever been curious about the question- ?Why can?t I shed weight on Weight Watchers??, in that case probably you are skimping on sleeping. If you are not receiving the right amount of sleep everyday, the body resorts to other ways of gaining energy. This often means pigging out or food binge so that you can stay alert. There are a lot who consume a lot of sugar and starchy foods to replenish their energy.

Maybe you have experimented with the ABC Diet, 17 Day Diet, Atkins diet or filling up in diet drinks yet still nothing happens or perhaps have asked yourself numerous of occasions the question- ?How come can?t I lose fat regardless of what I do?? The explanation for may be the problem making foods available been having these years. It is really easy to find out if your are allergic to a certain type of food, because it actually show itself in identifiable ways, but food intolerance its really hard to know. A food allergic reaction is a result of an erroneous identification of food by the body?s defense mechanisms while food intolerance?s can come from your insufficient enzymes or susceptibility to food preservatives. Food intolerance can actually show itself by an unexplained weight gain among others. Probably the most typical food intolerance?s come from the intake of soy, egg, gluten, dairy and corn.

(AP) ? Coke and Pepsi are chasing after the sweet spot: a soda with no calories, no artificial sweeteners and no funny aftertaste.

The world's top soft drink companies hope that's the elusive trifecta that will silence health concerns about soda and reverse the decline in consumption of carbonated drinks. But such a formula could be years away.

That's because the ingredient that makes soda taste good is also what packs on the pounds: high-fructose corn syrup. Artificial sweeteners like aspartame that are used in diet drinks don't have any calories but are seen as processed and fake. Natural sweeteners that come from plants present the most promising alternative, but companies haven't yet figured out how to mask their metallic aftertaste.

Despite the complexities, soft drink makers push on in their search.

"I can't say when it will be here, but it's in the reasonable future," said Al Carey, who heads the beverage unit for the Americas at PepsiCo Inc., the world's No. 2 soda maker.

There's good reason that soft drink makers are so eager to tweak their formulas. Once a beloved American treat, sodas are now being blamed for the nation's bulging waistlines ? two-thirds of the country's adults are overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That, coupled with the growing variety of flavored waters and sports drinks, has sent per capita soda consumption down 17 percent to about 1.3 cans a day since its peak in 1998, according to Beverage Digest, an industry tracker.

In New York City, a ban on the sale of sugary drinks bigger than 16 ounces in restaurants, theaters and stadiums could take effect as early as March. The mayor of Cambridge, Mass., proposed a similar ban last month. And in Richmond, Calif., voters will decide in November whether to pass the nation's first penny-per-ounce tax on soda and other sugary drinks such as fruit juices and teas.

All the negative publicity has some once-faithful soda drinkers cutting back. Krista Koster, a 29-year-old who lives in Washington D.C., used to down about two cans of soda a day. Now she's trying to kick the habit and be more conscious about what she drinks.

"I've just been hearing how bad soda is," said Koster, who works in public relations. "You start considering a lot of the ingredients, whether it's fake sugar or the real sugar."

High-fructose corn syrup, the cheap sweetener that's used in most sodas, has the same nutritional value and taste of sugar. A can of regular soda typically has about 40 grams of high-fructose corn syrup and 140 calories. By comparison, the same amount of apple juice has about 38 grams of sugar and 165 calories, but companies can tout the vitamins and other nutrients juice provides.

Aspartame, the artificial sweetener commonly used in drinks such as Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi, doesn't have any calories. But some drinkers worry about the fact that the sweeteners are not naturally occurring in nature. Public perception has been colored by past studies that have suggested it caused cancer and brain tumors in rats even though The American Cancer Society says there's no evidence showing it has any link with an increased risk for cancer in adults.

The concerns have led soft drink companies to search for natural, zero-calorie sweeteners, including stevia, which is derived from a South American shrub. Natural sweeteners have neither the calories of sugar nor the negative associations of artificial sweeteners. The trick, however, is figuring out how to make them taste good in colas.

"Every sweetener has its own notes that need to be mixed with other flavors," said Mehmood Khan, chief science officer for PepsiCo. "It's a bit like an orchestra playing music, as opposed to one instrument."

So far, stevia is the natural sweetener that has gotten the most attention and is already used in Coca-Cola and PepsiCo products, including orange juice and bottled teas. But it's proving more difficult to hide the aftertaste in colas.

Soft drink makers are testing different extracts from the stevia plant that they hope will be easier to blend. They're also scouring the world for other naturally occurring sweeteners, such as one called mogroside that is extracted from monk fruit and a derivative of a berry called miracle fruit.

Coca-Cola, based in Atlanta, says it's currently testing additional drinks that use stevia and other natural sweeteners but declined to give details. The tests are part of the ongoing "home-use tests" the company conducts, in which consumers may be given a six-pack of a new product to try over the course of a week.

To accelerate the pace of such trials, Coca-Cola two years ago dedicated a production line at one of its plants solely to churning out test beverages. But taste isn't the only consideration for the world's biggest soda maker.

"Some of the very exciting (sweeteners) we're playing with are really small in terms of production and planting, and they need to be nurtured," says Katie Bayne, president of Coca-Cola's North American soda business.

Coca-Cola also is testing versions of its Sprite and Fanta that use stevia in Atlanta, Detroit, Louisville, Ky. and Memphis, Tenn. The drinks have about half the calories of regular Sprite and Fanta (70 per can, instead of 140 or 160, respectively). But the "Select" drinks fall short of the ideal because they have sugar.

PepsiCo, based in Purchase, N.Y., is also on the hunt for new drinks that use natural, no-calorie sweeteners. In 2010, the company entered a $62 million, four-year deal with food flavor company Senomyx Inc. to develop natural sweeteners and "taste enhancers" that can intensify sweetness. Coca-Cola also previously had an eight-year contract with Senomyx; neither of the partnerships has yet produced any products for commercial use.

Dr Pepper Snapple Group, the nation's third-largest soda maker, also is searching for the right combination. The company's line of flavored sodas, such as Sunkist and A&W Root Beer, may make it easier to mask the taste of natural sweeteners like stevia than with colas.

At a beverage industry conference earlier this year, Dr Pepper's Chief Financial Officer Marty Ellen said he thinks a "sweetener breakthrough" is achievable in the next few years.

Recreating the exact taste of extremely valuable brands such as Coke and Pepsi is a high-stakes game and companies don't want to rush any drinks to the market. But making a natural cola that doesn't have any calories isn't impossible. Smaller companies such as Zevia, based in Culver City, Calif., already make such colas using stevia.

Zevia is now sold in 10,500 locations ? including Kroger and Whole Foods ? up from just 850 locations four years ago. CEO Paddy Spence doesn't think Coke and Pepsi's efforts to come up with their own zero-calorie drinks will threaten his company.

"When consumers see a brand all of a sudden with different positioning, they see right through that," Spence said. "They'll say 'you're a sugar soda company that has a couple different stevia products.'"

Still, considering their enormous resources, it's likely that soda companies will eventually find a way to make natural drinks with no calories that taste good, says Mike Jacobson of the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

"If you look 10 years ahead, we're going to see a different marketplace for sodas," he said.

ACNE SCARS: Conceal & Soften | Diet-Fitness-Health-Healthy Aging

Excuse me, you may find people crazy by saying that?s it?s genetics. As a medical student I will defend that hypothesis. Acne is a very complex skin disease (yes it is considered as one whether it?s offesive of not), genetics play a great part in it but it isn?t only genetics since genetics have effects on hormonal secretion and sebum secretion. I suggest maybe you research before imposing some treatment that? has worked for you but that may not work for everyone. Skin comes in different kinds.

Computer Software

Software is a program that facilitates a PC to execute a particular assignment, as disparate to the substantial mechanism of the hardware. This takes account of application software for instance a word processor, that facilitates a user to carry out an assignment, as well as system software such as an OS, which allows additional software to work accurately, through edging among hardware as well as by means of other software.

Convenient computer systems segregate software to three most important classes: system software, programming software and application software, though the feature is subjective, and habitually distorted. Software has to be "loaded" to the computer's storage space. Just the once the software is loaded, the computer is capable to carry out the functions of the software. Computers control through implementing the program of the computer itself. This engages transitory of commands from the application, all the way through the system; en route for the hardware that eventually take delivery of the order as machine code. Every order causes the computer to perform a function of moving data, function a calculation, or else changing the managing course of commands. Software is composed of one or more files such as programs, scripts, software libraries, configuration files, data files, electronic documents or source code. In other words, the software can be a complete computer application, or a spare part such as a software component or a plug-in. Programs, scripts and software libraries contain sequences of instructions in groups called functions or procedures. A software library in each function or procedure can be performed separately, while in a program or script running the start instruction causes the execution chain in all other directions. The instruction execution is rarely linear. In a script, the instructions are written in an easy to read for a human, and executable by the computing device via software called interpreter or interpreter. In a source code file instructions are written in an easy to read for a human, software called compiler will transform it into machine code - executable by the computing device, or bytecode - easy to read for a software emulator. A component is software intended for use as a spare part in several other programs. A plug-in is software intended for use as a spare part for particular software. Components and plug-in are often in the form of software libraries. Configuration files contain adjustment values ??which adapt the software to run on the computer configuration. The configuration files are often in form readable and editable using text editor software. Software may contain various files, such as images, sounds, texts or documents. These files can be used by the software, such as an icon displayed on the GUI, or be made available to the user like using as a model, or as an example. The programming language is a standardized set of rules for writing source code. The failure of the programming language causes the failure of the automatic working compiler or interpreter. Polyamory & Managing Attachment | Charlie Glickman | Adult ...

I received this message through my contact page and since it?s the kind of question a lot of people have, I thought I?d turn it into a blog post.

I am 31, married, and working as expatriate away from my husband. Not only that I have an extremely high libido but also I am using sex as stress relief, so we have an understanding that we can have an open marriage as long as it doesn?t complicate matters.

My issue here is how to ask men for sex without engaging into a relationship. I am very communicative and emphatic, so men easily fall for me. This I have no nerves, energy or wish to deal with. I am interested only in sex. What should I do? How to approach them?

It?s amazing how often this kind of thing comes up. Lots of women who are looking for partners say that the men they meet don?t want to get tied down, while the ones who are looking for a non-exclusive lover often run across guys who want to turn it into a relationship. It probably says something interesting about people (or at least, men who have sex with women). In any case, there are a few things you might try to increase the odds of finding someone compatible with your needs.

First off, are you looking for men who are already familiar with open relationships/polyamory? Although the overall pool is smaller, it?s worth starting with men who are in that world because they?re more likely to understand what you want and be on board with the idea. In fact, you might even find a guy who?s looking for a lover while his partner is out of town or something similar. If you?re not sure where to look, check out polyamory.com. And depending on where you are, there might be a local poly organization you could connect with. In my experience, you?re more likely to find success if you can find partners who understand what you?re looking for and are seeking something similar.

Whether you go that route or not, I think that one of the less recognized skills of open relationships is managing attachment. I?m talking about attachment as bonding, not attachment in the Buddhist sense of the word. For example, my partner and I are in an open relationship and one of the ways that we manage that is that we don?t do sleepovers. After a date, we go home, take a shower, and sleep in our bed. That?s because sleeping with someone (and I?m using that word in the literal sense, not as a euphemism for sex) is usually very bonding, especially after having sex with them. Scents and pheromones have a way of increasing connection, so limiting that can keep things from getting entangled.

Other people have guidelines like limiting how often they get together with someone, or how often they talk on the phone/email/text, or what kinds of sex they have. I know people who will get together with a lover for drinks, but not dinner. Or who will split the cost of dinner, rather than letting the other person pay for it. Or who might get dinner with a lover, but not do more ?date-like? things such as going to a movie.

Since there are different approaches, I definitely suggest reading Tristan Taormino?s book Opening Up: A Guide to Creating and Sustaining Open Relationships. While there are other great books on the topic, Opening Up has a lot of info gleaned from the author?s survey of over 120 people in different open relationships, so you?ll have more ideas to work with. The book also has lots of resources and community groups, so that will probably help you find like-minded people.

Another way you can maintain some distance, as well as your safety, is to have a very frank and honest discussion with each potential partner about your safer sex limits. I?m a big fan of Reid Mihalko?s safer sex elevator pitch as a really useful model. And stick to your boundaries- sometimes, we want to shift them as we get to know someone and feel more comfortable, but it?s important to keep them consistent. Not only does that protect you, it also keeps your sexual relationship from drifting in the direction of a romantic relationship.

Some people also maintain some distance in their sexual relationships by making their other lovers topics for conversation. I?m not suggesting that you gossip about your partners or turn dinner into a processing session. Instead, if you say things like ?I got an email from a lover of mine about this issue that I know you?re interested in?? or ?I was talking with my husband on the phone and?? That can help keep the person you?re with from forgetting about your husband or pretending that he doesn?t exist. If a guy can?t handle that, then odds are he can?t handle what you want, anyway.

On the flip side, how much do you tell your husband? I know that a lot of people have ?don?t ask, don?t tell? policies, especially if it?s happening at a distance. But I?ve seen that lead to even more complications in the long run. In any case, if you do tell your husband about your other relationships, it doesn?t have to be in detail. And simply telling a potential lover that your husband knows what you?re up to can help keep things transparent. It also reduces the chances that your lover will think that he can get you to break up with your husband.

It?s probably a good idea to familiarize yourself with New Relationship Energy. NRE is that feeling at the beginning of a relationship when we often become a bit obsessed with someone, we have difficulty seeing their flaws, and we want to spend a lot of time with them. It?s part of the bonding/attachment process and often lasts about six months, give or take. It can be a lot of fun, but it can also lead us into deepening a connection more than is good for us. It takes some practice to ride it without letting it ride you, which is why I suggested seeking men who are familiar with open relationships and creating some boundaries to maintain some distance.

I hope that helps and that you find the fun and pleasure you?re looking for!

Your feet may soon be your password

1 hr.

Shoes outfitted with high-tech soles that can confirm a person?s identity in just a few steps may soon serve as our keycards and?computer passwords, and could?even let doctors know when we show signs of dementia.

They work by combing physical and behavioral biometrics ? measurements of a foot?s shape and person?s gait, for example.

Both the shape of our feet and how we walk are unique, explained Todd Gray, chairman and president of Autonomous ID.?

An algorithm fuses this information to create an anonymous ID that is stored on a tiny chip in the insole.

?Not even the user knows what it is,? he told me.

This ID is used, for example, to unlock your door you are within a few feet of it.?

?There is nothing to remember, nothing to swipe, nothing to touch, no backend system to incorporate the authenticity of the biometric,? he said.

Gray said he started working on the concept in 2007 when Iraqi insurgents dressed in U.S. uniforms walked onto a base and abducted U.S. soldiers.

The concept is considered more secure and private than, say, using a fingerprint or eye scan to gain entry to a high security area.

?If your thumb is the only access into a door, they are going to cut it off,? Gray said. ?This is war.?

Autonomous ID partnered this July with Carnegie Mellon University?s Pedo-Biometrics Research and Identity Automation Lab to authenticate and fine tune the technology.

The lab is to receive $1.5 million per year in funding for the venture.

The team will also probe the potential to use the technology as a way to detect early warning signs of diseases such as Parkinson?s and dementia, which can affect how we walk.

Changes in gait, which the insole would notice, could be monitored for a few weeks, explained Mario Savvides, the lab?s director.

?We haven?t started working on this yet, but once we do, it is going to open up a whole new world of possibility,? he told me.

White Rice, like Flour, Increases Risk for Diabetes

July 22, 2012

A review of four studies, following more than 350,000 people for 4 to 22 years, shows that eating white rice markedly increases risk for diabetes in Asians, even more than it does in Caucasians (British Medical Journal, March 15, 2012).

GLYCEMIC INDEX: After you eat, blood sugar levels rise. How high blood sugar levels rise after you eat a certain food is called the Glycemic Index (GI) of that food. The higher blood sugar levels rise after you eat that food, the higher the GI, and the more likely that food is to increase your risk for developing diabetes (Diabetes Care, 2004;27:2701-6). The GI of white rice is 64, brown rice is 55, whole wheat (not ground into flour) is 41 and barley is 25 (Am J Clin Nutr, 2002;76:5-56).

WHY SOME FOODS CAUSE WEIGHT GAIN AND DIABETES, WHILE OTHERS DO NOT: All plants are rich sources of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are combinations of sugars, either a single sugar, two or more sugars bound together, thousands of sugars bound together called starch, or millions of sugars bound together called fiber. Fiber has its sugars bound together so tightly that it is not absorbed, or absorbed very slowly as it is fermented by bacteria in the colon.

Carbohydrates in plants rarely cause a high rise in blood sugar. However, when the plant is changed by grinding, juicing, stripping off fiber, or any other method, it is usually absorbed much faster resulting in a much higher rise in blood sugar.

A high rise in blood sugar causes your pancreas to release large amounts of insulin which makes you eat more and increases your chances of gaining weight and storing fat in your body. Increasing body fat blocks insulin receptors which causes a high rise in blood sugar and leads to diabetes.

WHITE RICE: Whole grain (brown) rice is a grass seed with a tight outer capsule, made primarily of fiber, that delays absorption. White rice is milled to remove the outer capsule. This markedly increases the rate of absorption and causes a higher rise in blood sugar.

FLOUR: All whole grains are seeds of grasses with tight capsules. Grinding wheat or any other whole grain into flour removes the capsule and increases the rate of absorption to cause a high rise in blood sugar.

JUICES: Turning any fruit into a juice is the most damaging of all. Sugared drinks are absorbed much faster than sugar in solid food and therefore cause the highest rises in blood sugar.

RECOMMENDATIONS: You can usually eat an unlimited amount of fruits, vegetables, WHOLE grains (not ground into flour), beans, seeds, and nuts. Eat brown rice, rather than white rice, and whole grains rather than bakery products or pastas. Restrict all sugared drinks including fruit juices.

What Can You Do if You Sit All Day at Your Job?

Last week's eZine, Sitting All Day Long Shortens Life, Even If You Exercise, upset many people whose jobs require them to sit.

Muscles are inactive when you sit. Resting muscles draw no sugar from your bloodstream and therefore encourage a high rise in blood sugar, even if you are not diabetic. A high rise in blood sugar can damage every cell in your body.

When you exercise, you contract your muscles, and contracting muscles draw sugar from your bloodstream without even needing insulin. The more intensely you exercise, the longer muscles can draw sugar from your bloodstream after you finish exercising. Also the longer you exercise, the greater the amount of sugar muscles draw from your bloodstream.

You get maximum protection from a high rise in blood sugar during exercise. The more intensely you exercise, the longer you are protected from a high rise in blood sugar after you finish exercising. For example, most people still retain maximum protection up to an hour after they finish exercising. This benefit then gradually tapers off after about 17 hours.

Therefore all people, particularly those with desk jobs and those who spend a lot of time at a computer or watching television, should have an exercise program, and the longer and more intensely they exercise, the greater their protection from disease and premature death.

When you are sitting at your desk, move as much as you can. Stand and walk around often. Even fidgeting and moving your feet or arms while you sit will draw sugar into muscles. Consider trying one of the under-desk pedaling or stair-stepper exercise devices (available at Amazon and many other sources).

Sugared Drinks Do Not Reduce Hunger

Extra calories in sugared FOODS make you eat less of other foods, but the extra calories that you get from sugared DRINKS do not cause you to eat less (Int J Obes Relat Metab Disord, 2000 Jun;24(6):794-800).

For four weeks, men and women drank a fixed amount of calories in a sugared drink, and for the next four weeks, they ate the same number of sugared calories in jelly beans. They were allowed to eat as much food as they wanted but had to keep careful count of all the food that they ate. When the group ate solid jelly beans, they ate 17 percent less calories in their food, but when they took the calories in sugared drinks, they did not reduce their intake of food at all.

AIDS specialists aim to jump-start hunt for a cure

Graphics shows global trends related to the HIV/AIDS epidemic

Graphics shows global trends related to the HIV/AIDS epidemic

WASHINGTON (AP) ? For years it seemed hopeless. Now the hunt for a cure for AIDS is back on.

International AIDS specialists on Thursday released what they call a road map for research toward a cure for HIV ? a strategy for global teams of scientists to explore a number of intriguing leads that just might, years from now, pan out.

"Today's the first step," said French Nobel laureate Francoise Barre-Sinoussi, co-discoverer of the HIV virus who also co-chaired development of the strategy.

"No one thinks it's going to be easy," added strategy co-chair Dr. Steven Deeks of the University of California, San Francisco. "Some don't think it's possible."

The announcement came just before the International AIDS Conference begins on Sunday, when more than 20,000 scientists, activists and policymakers gather in the nation's capital with a far different focus: how to dramatically cut the spread of the AIDS virus, what they call "turning the tide" of the epidemic, using some powerful tools already in hand.

Chief among them is getting more of the world's 34 million HIV-infected people on life-saving medications, so they stay healthier and are less likely to infect others. By itself, that is a huge hurdle. Just 8 million of the 15 million treatment-eligible patients in AIDS-ravaged poor regions of the world are getting the drugs.

But Barre-Sinoussi, president-elect of the International AIDS Society, which hosts the conference, said that lifelong treatment, as good as it is, isn't the end-all solution ? and that science finally is showing that a cure "could be a realistic possibility."

The panelists refused to estimate Thursday how much this research would cost. But already, the National Institutes of Health has increased spending on cure-related research, about $56 million last year, according to a report in this week's issue of the journal Nature. Scientists attempting cure research will meet Friday and Saturday, ahead of the AIDS conference, to compare notes.

And the new strategy won praise from Michel Sidibe, executive director of UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Program on HIV and AIDS.

"The previous generation fought for treatment," he said. "Our generation must fight for a cure."

Today's anti-HIV drugs can tamp down the virus to undetectable levels ? but they don't eradicate it. Instead, tiny amounts of the virus can hide out in different tissues and roar back if medication is stopped.

That means there's no certainty of developing a cure.

"I'm not sure we can, but we're going to try," Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said in a recent interview. "This virus is uncanny in its ability to be able to integrate itself into a cell, as a reservoir, and no matter what we've done so far, we have not been able to eliminate that reservoir."

Yet one person in the world apparently has been cured: Timothy Ray Brown of San Francisco, who in 2006 was living in Berlin when in addition to his HIV, he got leukemia.

Brown underwent a blood stem cell transplant ? what once was a bone marrow transplant ? to treat the cancer. His own immune system was destroyed. And his German transplant surgeon found a donor who was among the 1 percent of whites who have a gene mutation that makes them naturally resistant to HIV ? their cells lack the specific doorway the virus uses to get inside.

It worked. Brown has been off HIV medications for five years and is doing well, Deeks said Thursday.

That dangerous and expensive transplant isn't a practical solution, but it has sparked a variety of research into other possible ways to eradicate HIV. Already, 12 early-stage studies involving small numbers of patients ? fewer than 200 people worldwide ? are under way, the international panel said Thursday. Results to see if any are promising enough to pursue should be out in the next year or two.

The priorities of the new cure research strategy:

?Determine why HIV hibernates and persists.

?Learn why some people are naturally resistant. In addition to that 1 percent of people with the gene mutation, researchers now are studying a small group of patients in France who started medication soon after they were infected and many years later were able to stop the drugs without the virus rebounding.

?Develop and test strategies to make HIV patients more naturally resistant. Already gene therapy studies are under way to knock that HIV doorway out of people's own infection-fighting blood cells.

?Learn where all those secret reservoirs are.

?Develop strategies to attack the reservoirs. One new attempt uses drugs to wake up the dormant HIV so the immune system can spot and attack it, what Deeks called the "shock and kill approach." Last spring, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, researchers reported that a drug normally used for lymphoma made some latent HIV rapidly detectable in six patients. Deeks has a similar study under way using an old anti-alcoholism drug.

?Develop good tests to measure these tiny amounts of dormant HIV, crucial to telling if any cure attempts are promising short of taking patients off their regular medication.

New York Asbestos Lawyer from Belluck & Fox, LLP, Applauds ...

Attorney Joseph W. Belluck says a new report about an innovative, lung-sparing treatment being used by doctors at the University of Pennsylvania sends a hopeful message to victims of asbestos-related diseases such as pleural mesothelioma.

New York, NY (PRWEB) July 13, 2012

New York mesothelioma lawyer Joseph W. Belluck expressed optimism today in reaction to a recent report on an innovative, lung-sparing strategy that is being used by doctors at the University of Pennsylvania to treat patients with pleural mesothelioma.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on the new treatment method being used by thoracic surgeon Joseph S. Friedberg and his team at the University of Pennsylvania. The method also was recently featured in The Annals of Thoracic Surgery medical journal.

According to the Inquirer, patients with pleural mesothelioma ? a rare, incurable form of cancer that is linked to asbestos exposure ? typically die within a year of diagnosis.

However, 27 of 38 patients treated by Friedberg and his team ? all of whom were suffering advanced-stage cancer at the time of treatment ? have survived beyond two years, with four patients reaching five years. All underwent the lung-sparing procedure.

?This is encouraging news that gives hope to mesothelioma victims and their families,? said Belluck, a partner in the nationally recognized New York personal injury firm of Belluck Fox, LLP, who focuses on mesothelioma and other asbestos-related cases. ?We look forward to seeing more developments involving this treatment method.?

Pleural mesothelioma arises from asbestos fibers becoming lodged in the thin membrane encasing the lungs. Victims often are exposed to asbestos while working as plumbers, pipefitters, insulators, electricians, mechanics and certain other occupations. A question frequently posed in mesothelioma lawsuits is whether the victim?s employer knew of the dangers of asbestos exposure but continued to place employees at risk.

Mesothelioma symptoms, such as coughing and difficulty with breathing, tend to develop decades after the initial asbestos exposure.

?We?ve seen how devastating this disease can be,? Belluck said. ?That?s why our firm is excited to hear of advances such as those at the University of Pennsylvania.?

The treatment is known as ?radical pleurectomy.? In contrast to a mesothelioma treatment method known as ?extrapleural pneumonectomy,? the patient?s lungs are preserved while surgeons operate to remove the disease.

The patients also undergo photodynamic therapy, which combines a cancer cell-destroying drug with laser light therapy.

According to the Inquirer, Friedberg has found that patients with two lungs who have undergone the light therapy have been physically better able to cope with a relapse of the cancer. ?The cancer comes back more like a house cat than a tiger,? the newspaper quotes Friedberg as saying.

Belluck encouraged those diagnosed with mesothelioma to research all possible treatment options and seek out mesothelioma specialists such as Dr. Friedberg.

He also said it is important for victims and their families to contact an attorney to learn more about their legal rights if they believe their disease was caused by workplace asbestos exposure or from consumer products.

National Restaurant Association Logo, Before and After

Established in 1919, the National Restaurant Association (NRA), as its name implies, is the business association for the restaurant industry, representing more than 380,000 members in restaurant and foodservice outlets. The NRA?s mission is to ?lead America?s restaurant industry into a new era of prosperity, prominence and participation, enhancing the quality of life for all we serve.? It does this by providing tools and advice, advocating on its members behalf in Washington, D.C., and hosting the industry?s largest trade show, the NRA Show. Earlier this month, NRA introduced a new logo. Although no design credit was given they do mention in their press release that they ?sought input from industry professionals, state restaurant associations and policy makers to create a logo concept that resonates with a wide audience and that illustrates the restaurant and foodservice industry in multiple ways.?

Previous logos over the years. Full timeline details here.

Harkening back to a previous logo, leveraging the circular elements of ProStart and ServSafe logos, and propelling us forward with the icon on the right, this logo enhances our relevance in today?s world. Its abstract form enables myriad industry segments to see themselves reflected in it ? from a pizza to the top of a wine glass, and everything in between ? and evokes our interconnectedness and spirit of hospitality. The use of blue and red allow for continuity from our previous logo, and a fresh, professional font emphasizes our impact on the industry. The arcs symbolize our representation of the entire foodservice industry and our commitment to being its trusted advisor. Their dynamism evokes the opportunity and success we will create for our members.

Video explaining where all the swooshes come from.

We have had a lot of good work this week and I would love to continue putting up winners but I need to meet my quota of bad work in order to have competitors vie for a spot in our end-of-year Worst list and I think we just found an elite in this category. I sort of feel bad for posting this work knowing that I?m going to skewer it and it?s going to get killed in the comments, but there really needs to be an end to logos that use a swoosh. More so for logos that use two. And even more dire for logos that build a whole rationale on swooshes. Unless you are a company that specializes in flights around the orbit of a planet, a swoosh is useless. They are boring to look at and although they can be assigned any number of press release superlatives they are meaningless and generic.

So it is especially sad to see a national association, representing hundreds of thousands of businesses redesign with a pair of swooshes in the twenty-first century. Given the amount of potential visual cues that exist in the restaurant industry, two swooshes that look like a dome lid serving tray is the least imaginative solution. But let?s assume swooshes are great and that this is best viable concept: The execution is relatively ? relatively ? decent, with swooshes that are properly built and typography that isn?t totally ugly; it?s hard to screw up centered Gotham all caps. The lock-up of icon and type is excruciating though, with the oversized swooshes hanging on the right, throwing the centered type completely off balance. In the end, I guess the logo could be worse. It could have used Helvetica.
