Investors eye the 'cliff' as Obama gains in polls

NEW YORK (AP) ? As President Barack Obama widened his lead over Mitt Romney in polls this month, traders at hedge funds and investment firms began shooting emails to clients with a similar theme: It's time to start preparing for an Obama victory.

What many in the market worry about isn't that high earners may pay more in taxes if Obama is re-elected. It's gridlock in Washington come January, when more than $600 billion in spending cuts and tax hikes could kick in just as the country smacks into its borrowing limit again.

There is reason to expect a deal. If Obama wins, the Republican fight to make him a one-term president will be lost. With the elections over, there will be little reason or room for political posturing. House Republicans could finally decide to be more cooperative.

"They'll be faced with determining whether we get a recession or not," says Jeff Kleintop, chief market strategist at LPL Financial.

But investors remember the budget battle in the summer of last year, which ended with the country losing its top credit rating and panicked investors fleeing the stock market. Investors are fearful of a repeat. In a second term, Obama would likely again be pitted against a Republican-controlled House of Representatives.

"If you have any kind of gridlock, you run the risk of inaction," says Tom Simons, a market economist at the investment bank Jefferies. "This is a situation where inaction is the worst outcome."

The next fight could get just as messy, but most on Wall Street think Congress and Obama would eventually manage to postpone some of the $600-billion-plus "fiscal cliff" before the year is out and avoid tipping the economy into a recession.

The Congressional Budget Office recently laid out the grim consequences of dropping off the fiscal cliff. Starting Jan. 1, tax cuts signed by President George W. Bush expire as do Obama's cuts to payroll taxes. Federal spending on defense and other domestic programs will drop, while emergency unemployment benefits run out.

The combined effect off all these changes would shrink the economy nearly 3 percent at an annual rate in the first half of next year, the CBO estimates, and push unemployment up to 9.1 percent by the fall. Recent surveys of businesses suggest the threat is already weighing on the minds of executives when they're making hiring and spending plans.

For the world's biggest money managers, the fiscal cliff now ranks as the greatest hazard to the global economy, according to Bank of America's most recent fund manager survey. It topped the European debt crisis, a collapse in Chinese real estate and even a war between Israel and Iran.

The danger looms so large to most investors that they believe Washington will find a way to escape it.

"Ultimately, I think a deal gets done, but it's just a question of how long it takes to get there," Kleintop says. "By no means is it going to be an easy process. Gridlock means there's a greater chance that this drags on into next year."

Analysts at investment firms have kept a close eye on polling numbers and especially on the Intrade, an online marketplace where members can trade predictions on events like elections. Polls show voters leaning toward Obama in key swing states. On Intrade, the odds have swung strongly in Obama's direction, jumping to a 76 percent chance of re-election, up from 51 percent at the start of September.

Democrats are far less likely to take the House from Republicans, who hold a 50-seat majority. Intrade markets put the chance that Republicans will control the House at 74 percent.

If these forecasts prove right, the balance of power in Washington would remain the same. Democrats keep the White House and a slim majority in the Senate, and Republicans keep the House.

What troubles investors is that the same cast of characters who fought over raising the debt ceiling last year could be taking up the same task again while debating how best to maneuver around the fiscal cliff.

Expect to see a replay of the debt-ceiling fight, says Ian Lyngen, a senior government bond strategist at CRT Capital. Except that this time what's at stake is the country's borrowing limit and a recession.

"I'm sure it's going to go just like it did last time ? very messy," Lyngen says.

In one dizzying stretch that August, the Dow Jones industrial average dropped 2,000 points in three weeks.

"And don't forget," Lyngen adds, "that ultimately got resolved."

The widespread belief on Wall Street is that Congress and Obama will start negotiations over raising the debt limit and pushing back the fiscal cliff when they return in late November ? the so-called lame-duck session, because newly elected members of Congress will not have taken their seats.

Twists in the talks will likely rattle markets as the new year approaches. But if stocks do fall sharply, investors expect that would push Republicans and Democrats to reach a deal.

"Ugly negotiations in the lame-duck session could really throw the market for a loop," says Kleintop. "It could be a painful process for investors."

In a report out this week, analysts at Goldman Sachs tried to estimate just how painful the process will be. Goldman expects the stock market will start sinking after the elections as people realize the fiscal cliff "will not be solved in a smooth fashion."

That's the reason Goldman forecasts that one broad measure of the stock market, the Standard & Poor's 500 index, will end this year at 1,250 ? a 13 percent drop from where it closed Thursday.

But all of that mayhem sounds better than the alternative: another recession caused by letting the $600 billion in tax increases and spending cuts through. It's also why many take solace in the idea that, whatever their political party, nobody wants the economy to shrink.

Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at the brokerage BTIG, wonders if that's placing too much faith in Washington. "Republicans aren't losing the House," Greenhaus said. "So as the odds of Obama winning re-election go up, what you have to ask is: How are these two parties going to find middle ground in just a few months? I have no idea."

An introduction to gambling

Gambling is the wagering of money against an opponent on the outcome of a particular event with the hope of winning back the money wagered plus more. The opponent may be a bookmaker, or one or more other players, who also risks money against what they predict the outcome of the event to be.

Gambling can take place via a bookmaker who dictates the odds of certain outcomes of events, for example the odds of various horses winning a race. This can take place in bookmaker?s premises on the high street, at the events themselves, for example at horse or greyhound race tracks, or online via bookmaker?s websites.

Casinos are premises dedicated to gambling with a wide range of games on offer, from table games such as poker and blackjack, to electronic games such as slot machines. In casinos, players exchange money for chips of the same monetary value before they start playing. Casinos offer the thrill of gambling along with entertainment such as live cabaret shows, but online casinos offer the excitement of all the usual games from the comfort of home.

Bingo has been a popular pastime for years and has a large online presence. Bingo is similar to lotteries and scratchcards in that money is exchanged for a card printed with numbers, with the hope that numbers selected at random will match those on the card and entitle the player to a prize.

Before you begin gambling, decide on a maximum amount to play with so that if you get caught up in the excitement of the game, you do not risk money you didn?t originally intend to spend. For strategic games, particularly card games like poker, it is often useful to practise without betting money so that when you come to play the game for real you increase your skill and chance of winning.

Haqqani says Pak civilians must step up to plate if they wish to see end of military role in politics

Pakistan News.Net Saturday 29th September, 2012

Former Pakistan ambassador to the United States, Husain Haqqani has said that Pakistani civilians will have to 'step up to the plate' if they wish to see an end to the Pakistani military's role in domestic politics and its influence on the country's security and foreign policies.

"I think that Pakistan's civilians have to step up to the plate. As civilians clarify their own worldview [and] make it obvious as to where they disagree or differ from the traditional paradigm that has been defined by military officers in the past, Pakistan will be able to move away from military dominance," the Daily Times quoted Haqqani, as saying, during an interview with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL).

"Pakistan has suffered a lot from the military's political role. The military's political role is not only when it takes over the country, but also when it tries to define what is good for the country and what is not. That job should rest with parliament, with the Pakistani media, with open debate, [and] with civil society," he added.

Haqqani also said that the full US withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2014 would have a disastrous impact on Pakistan, adding that the US cannot afford to "leave Afghanistan in a state of chaos."

"The United States cannot afford to leave Afghanistan in a state of chaos. If it does, the fallout for Pakistan is going to be disastrous. It is in Pakistan's interest to have a stable Afghanistan. The disagreement [between the United States and Pakistan] that we see sometimes is on the definition of what constitutes a stable Afghanistan," he said.

On the 2013 parliamentary elections in Pakistan, Haqqani said that whatever maybe the outcome, he hopes that democracy continues to flourish in the nation and treads a path towards progress.

"I hope that whatever the outcome of Pakistan's next elections, democracy continues to flourish and Pakistan's politics become more mature and reach a point where, instead of just fighting the battles of yesterday, Pakistan's politicians also start addressing the issues of today and tomorrow," he said. Mars Curiosity rover discovers ancient streambed on planet's surface

This water flow was likely quite vigorous, perhaps akin to the flows produced by flash floods in desert areas here on Earth, researchers announced.

By Mike Wall,?SPACE.com / September 27, 2012

NASA's Curiosity rover found evidence for an ancient, flowing stream on Mars at a few sites, including the rock outcrop pictured here, which the science team has named 'Hottah' after Hottah Lake in Canada's Northwest Territories. This image mosaic was taken by Curiosity's 100-millimeter Mastcam telephoto lens on its 39th Martian day, or sol, of the mission.

Photos from the Curiosity rover?have revealed several different rocky outcrops that contain stones cemented into a layer of conglomerate rock. Some of these stones are rounded and large, indicating that they were transported relatively long distances across the Red Planet surface by water.

This water flow was likely quite vigorous, perhaps akin to the flows produced by flash floods in desert areas here on Earth, researchers announced today (Sept. 27).

"From the size of gravels it carried, we can interpret the water was moving about 3 feet per second, with a depth somewhere between ankle and hip deep," Curiosity co-investigator William Dietrich, of the University of California, Berkeley, said in a statement. [The Search for Water on Mars (Photos)]

"Plenty of papers have been written about channels on Mars with many different hypotheses about the flows in them," Dietrich added. "This is the first time we're actually seeing water-transported gravel on Mars. This is a transition from speculation about the size of streambed material to direct observation of it."

The findings came after researchers studied photographs of three different outcrops inside Gale Crater, where Curiosity touched down on Aug. 5.

The first outcrop, known as Goulburn, lies a few feet from the rover's landing site. Curiosity spotted the other two ? called Link and Hottah ? as it's been rambling toward an area called Glenelg, its first major science target.

Photos of Link really got the team thinking of long-ago stream flows, Curiosity chief scientist John Grotzinger, of Caltech in Pasadena, told reporters today. And images of Hottah, which juts from the Red Planet surface at an odd angle, pretty much sealed the deal.

"Hottah looks like someone jack-hammered up a slab of city sidewalk, but it's really a tilted block of an ancient streambed," Grotzinger said in a statement.

On Earth, tilted outcrops are usually the result of tectonic activity. But Hottah could have been deformed by a nearby impact or other process, Grotzinger said.

The?water on Mars?likely flowed several billion years ago, researchers said, though an exact timeframe will be tough to determine. But the extent of the system that produced the outcrops ? and the surrounding alluvial fan and channels ? suggests that it wasn't produced in a single shot.

Rather, water was likely flowing over a relatively long chunk of time, scientists said.

"I'm comfortable to argue that it's certainly beyond the thousand-year timescale, but we're still gathering data to go further with that," Dietrich told reporters today.?

The team has not yet analyzed Link or Hottah with Curiosity's 10 different science instruments; rather, the researchers' conclusions are based on images of?Mars?snapped by the rover's Mast Camera. But those pictures capture plenty of evidence, Grotzinger said.

"In some cases, when you do geology, a picture's worth a thousand words," he said.

The $2.5 billion?Mars rover Curiosity?is about 50 days into a roughly two-year mission to determine if the Gale Crater area has ever been capable of supporting microbial life.

Despite the outcrop discoveries, the six-wheeled robot's ultimate destination remains the base of Mount Sharp, a 3.4-mile-high (5.5 kilometers) mountain that rises from Gale's Center. The mysterious mountain's foothills show signs of long-ago exposure to liquid water.

"A long-flowing stream can be a habitable environment," Grotzinger said. "It is not our top choice as an environment for preservation of organics, though. We're still going to Mount Sharp, but this is insurance that we have already found our first potentially habitable environment."

Genetic sleuthing uncovers deadly new virus in Africa

Friday, September 28, 2012

An isolated outbreak of a deadly disease known as acute hemorrhagic fever, which killed two people and left one gravely ill in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the summer of 2009, was probably caused by a novel virus scientists have never seen before.

Described this week in the open-access journal PLoS Pathogens, the new microbe has been named Bas-Congo virus (BASV) after the province in the southwest corner of the Congo where the three people lived.

It was discovered by an international research consortium that included the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and University of California, Davis (UCD), Global Viral, the Centre International de Recherches M?dicales de Franceville in Gabon, the Institut National de Recherche Biom?dicale, Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Metabiota and others.

"Known viruses, such as Ebola, HIV and influenza, represent just the tip of the microbial iceberg," said Joseph Fair, PhD, a co-author and vice president of Metabiota. "Identifying deadly unknown viruses, such as Bas-Congo virus, gives us a leg up in controlling future outbreaks."

"These are the only three cases known to have occurred, although there could be additional outbreaks from this virus in the future," said Charles Chiu, MD, PhD, an assistant professor of laboratory medicine at UCSF and director of the UCSF-Abbott Viral Diagnostics and Discovery Center, who spearheaded the UCSF effort to identify the virus. Chiu and his team continue to work on new diagnostics to detect the virus so that health officials in Congo and elsewhere can quickly identify it should it emerge again.

One odd characteristic of the Bas-Congo virus, Chiu said, is that while a number of other viruses in Africa also cause deadly outbreaks of acute hemorrhagic fever?Ebola virus, Lassa virus and Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever virus to name a few ?the new virus is unlike any of them.

Genetically it is more closely related to the types of viruses that cause rabies, which are known to infect people with a very different sort of disease?a neurological illness that is uniformly fatal if untreated but may take months to develop.

An antibody test developed in this study was applied to the one patient who survived and to others who had come into contact with him. It suggested that the disease may be spread from person to person but likely originated from some other source, such as an insect or rodent.

The identity of this animal "reservoir" and the precise mode of transmission for the virus remain unclear and are currently being investigated by Metabiota and the central African members of the consortium through the PREDICT Project of USAID's Emerging Pandemic Threats Program.

How the New Virus Emerged

In the summer of 2009, a 15-year old boy in a small rural community called Mangala village suddenly fell ill and developed a bleeding nose, bleeding gums and bloody vomit. He rapidly worsened, dying within three days of the first signs of illness.

A week later, a 13-year old girl who attended the same school and lived in the same neighborhood as the boy came down with a similar, serious illness. She declined just as rapidly and also died within three days. One week after that, the male nurse who cared for this girl began showing the same symptoms, and he was transferred to a hospital in Boma, a nearby port city that sits along the Congo River upstream from Africa's Atlantic coast.

Members of the consortium, who had initiated a project to diagnose unusual cases of severe hemorrhagic fever, obtained blood samples collected from the nurse by the Congolese doctors and sent them to the laboratory of Eric Leroy, PhD, doctor of veterinary medicine at the Centre International de Recherches M?dicales de Franceville in Gabon. There the samples were tested for traces of any known virus, but nothing was found. The Metabiota scientists then solicited the expertise of Chiu at UCSF and Eric Delwart at the Blood Systems Research Institute (BSRI) in San Francisco to aid in the diagnosis.

The researchers ultimately identified a completely new virus as the cause of the mysterious illness through a powerful strategy for identifying novel pathogens known as "deep sequencing," in which millions of DNA sequences are generated from a clinical sample and then pieced together using computer algorithms combined with human analysis.

Distinct Attributes of Bas-Congo

The Bas-Congo virus belongs to a family of viruses known as the rhabdoviruses, a large family of viruses that infect plants, insects and mammals, including humans. The most famous member of this family is the virus that causes rabies. But even among the rhabdoviruses, Bas-Congo is something of an outlier, being very genetically distinct from other members of the family.

What's most unusual about this virus, though, said Chiu, is what it does to people.

No other rhabdoviruses are known to cause the acute, rapid and deadly hemorrhagic fever seen in the three cases in the Congo. Rabies, for instance, can be a deadly disease if untreated, but the course of rabies in humans is nothing like the rapid and deadly onset seen with the Bas-Congo virus. There is some precedent, however, for hemorrhagic disease from rhabdoviruses in the animal kingdom: fish rhabdoviruses are known to cause hemorrhagic septicemia?acute bleeding and death?in affected fish.

The third patient had enormous amounts of BASV in his bloodstream just two days after he fell ill?more than a million copies in every milliliter of blood.

The BASV sequence was also used to design an antibody test for the virus, an effort led by Graham Simmons at the BSRI, another member of the consortium. Antibodies are blood immune proteins produced in response to an infection. The antibody test allowed the researchers to screen both the third patient with acute hemorrhagic fever and other people who had come into contact with the third patient, including the nurse who cared for him in the Boma hospital. High levels of BASV-specific antibodies were found in the third patient, establishing that he indeed had been infected with Bas-Congo virus. The same antibodies were also found in the second nurse, even though he never actually became sick.

"What this suggests is that the disease may be transmissible from person to person?though it's most likely to have originated from some other source," said Nathan Wolfe, PhD, founder and chairman of Global Viral, and a co-author on the paper. "The fact that it belongs to a family of viruses known to infect a wide variety of mammals, insects and other animals means that it may perpetually exist in insect or other 'host' species and was accidentally passed to humans through insect bites or some other means."

A Career In Consulting Helped Prepare Young Entrepreneur To ...

Diana Goodwin says that times are changing: Student underemployment has been on the rise for years, alongside an increasingly competitive job market. It is no surprise that new graduates today are exploring less conventional career options.

With a commerce degree from the University of Toronto, Diana was able to successfully secure prestigious consultant position at Bain & Company, a global management consulting firm, after graduating in 2007.

As an ex-swim instructor, however, Diana also spent a lot of time thinking about the fact that most children weren?t getting the attention they needed in large community swimming classes and that, with today?s hectic lifestyle, parents were looking for a more convenient option to teach their kids who to swim.

Her business ? AquaMobile Swim School ? was born.?She was determined to create a swim school that provided high-quality individualized swimming lessons to students in the comfort and convenience of their own homes.

At first, it was something she was doing casually while working full-time at Bain.??I was doing it on the side,? she says. ?I only had time to put in a couple hours a week to grow the business.?

Those few hours proved to be enough to convince Diana ? she decided to take the leap into entrepreneurship based on what she enjoyed most.?Diana says she has no regrets about the time she spent at Bain, though.??If I were to do it over again, I would do exactly the same path of working in consulting before I?d do my own thing. 100%.?

She asserts, ?There are still a lot of skills you can learn in a traditional corporate job, a lot of connections you can make, and it brings in the money. If you?re starting [a business] right away, you?re not going to have that money.?

From there, she entered the MBA program at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in Illinois, where she made the final push to make her dreams become a reality.

?While I was at business school, I worked hard on developing a robust business plan so that I could take AquaMobile to the next level once I graduated,? she says. She received her MBA in 2011.

For most new graduates, however, A-list business schools may be out of reach.? Regardless of educational background, Diana?s biggest piece of advice for new graduates who want to pursue a career in entrepreneurship is: focus.

?Once you have an idea that you are passionate about, it?s important to focus on it and go for it,? Diana says.

?If you are being pulled in many different directions and working on developing multiple ventures, you will never be able to make one idea succeed because your attention is being split too many ways.?

Diana also emphasizes the importance of starting early, specifically, when it comes to networking.

?Go out there and start building your network. It?s really important and it?s something that people don?t necessarily do a good job of doing until they need something,? she says.??Just start getting involved in things. I?ve learned so much by getting involved in my community. You never know who can help you several years down the road.?

While Diana is a strong advocate for pursuing her passions, she is also an ardent believer in being practical and proactive. She encourages taking action whether it?s starting a business part-time or joining organizations with people who share the same vision.

?Depending on what type of venture it is, it may be something that can be done part-time while working full-time,? she says.

?I hear a lot of new grads who want to do something entrepreneurial, but they don?t have an idea. Maybe it?s getting together once a week with a group of like-minded friends where you can bounce ideas off each other. Brainstorming gets that creativity going and that?s what spurs ideas. If you sit around and wait, chances are it?s not going to come to you. Plan some time, start thinking about that idea, and work with the right people,? Diana affirms.

?Go for it.?

  • Focus. Choose one idea and go for it. Don?t get distracted along the way.
  • Start young. Build your network.
  • Start now. Start something part-time and surround yourself with like-minded people.

(AP Photo/Danny Johnston, File)

(AP) ? Christian activists attempted Thursday to deliver a petition to Hobby Lobby criticizing its challenge to a portion of the new federal health care law, but guards at the company's headquarters turned them away.

"I thought they'd let me drop off the package," said the Rev. Lance Schmitz, pastor of the Capitol Hill Church of the Nazarene in Oklahoma City.

Schmitz said more than 80,000 people had signed copies of a petition circulated nationwide by Faithful America, an online Christian group, and UltraViolet, which promotes women's rights. Schmitz said he intends to mail the petition to the company.

Lawyers representing Hobby Lobby this month sued the federal government claiming it should not be forced to provide workers with health insurance that covers the morning-after and week-after pills. Some say the drug's ability to prevent a fertilized egg from implanting in a woman's womb is tantamount to abortion.

Hobby Lobby operates 500 arts and crafts stores in 41 states. Its Christian owners allege in the lawsuit that providing coverage for certain medications violates their "deeply held religious beliefs."

An attorney for the company, Kyle Duncan, said the Green family, which owns Hobby Lobby, respects the religious convictions of others, "including those who do not agree with them."

"All they are asking is for the government to give them the same respect by not forcing them to violate their religious beliefs," Duncan said.

But Schmitz and spokespersons for the Christian groups said the drugs are contraceptives and that women have a right to make their own medical decisions.

"Access to contraceptive care is a very good thing," Schmitz said. "This isn't about abortion. These pills do not cause abortion. It's contraception."

Michael Sharrard, spokesman for Faithful America, said a large part of his group's efforts "is to try to counter extremists" and that it represents the "mainstream majority."

"It's a woman's personal decision on what kind of birth control to use," said Cat Barr, campaign director for UltraViolet. "Hobby Lobby is out of touch with mainstream Americans. It's not their role to be dictating medical decisions."

The petitions accuse Hobby Lobby's owners of using their Christian faith as an excuse to obstruct health care reform and deny women access to birth control. Petitioners vow to not shop at Hobby Lobby until the lawsuit, filed on Sept. 12 in U.S. District Court in Oklahoma City, is dismissed.

Duncan denied accusations that the company is attempting to block women's access to birth control.

"It's not true," Duncan said. "Hobby Lobby covers the vast majority of contraceptives, will continue to do so.

"The only people's rights that are being trampled on here are the Green family and the companies they operate," he said.

Duncan said Hobby Lobby provides generous health care benefits to its employees, including birth control. But the government is trying to force the company cover two specific drugs that the company's owners believe can cause early abortions.

"This is illegal and unconstitutional," he said.

The company claims that failure to provide the drugs in the company's health insurance plan could lead to fines of up to $1.3 million a day.

Duncan said the federal government's birth control guide states that drugs like the morning-after pill and the week-after pill can prevent implantation of a fertilized egg in the womb.

"Millions of Americans would consider that an early abortion," he said. "What the petitioners need to hear immediately is that the government cannot use healthcare reform as an excuse for trampling on religious rights."

Church of England chooses new leader to weather storms

LONDON (Reuters) - Church of England officials met in secret on Wednesday to choose the next Archbishop of Canterbury, a centuries-old role with the modern task of preventing 80 million Anglicans worldwide from splitting over gay marriage and women bishops.

The new church leader must reconcile modernists and traditionalists, and stem a long-term decline in church attendance, a difficult juggling act that some see as a poisoned chalice.

Outgoing Archbishop Rowan Williams, 62, a self-confessed "old hairy lefty" who opposed the Iraq war, said his successor as head of the global Anglican Communion will need "the constitution of an ox and the skin of a rhinoceros".

"It'd be hard to find somebody more unifying than Rowan Williams, and yet he hasn't managed to hold it together," Paul Handley, editor of the Church Times newspaper, told Reuters.

"Under him, there have been two significant changes: one is the growth of secularism ... and the other is greater division in the church over issues like women bishops, women priests and gay weddings."

The arcane process of selecting the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury is wrapped in layers of protocol perhaps unsurprising for a role with roots going back 1,400 years.

Meeting for three days behind closed doors at a secret location, a 16-member panel of bishops, church members and lay people will pick a preferred candidate and a reserve choice.

They will give the two names to Prime Minister David Cameron who will forward the name of the preferred candidate to the Queen, supreme governor of the Church of England. Once she approves the candidate, Cameron's Downing Street office will make the announcement next week, possibly on Wednesday.

The new archbishop will earn about 74,000 pounds a year and have lodgings in the Old Palace in Canterbury, southeast England, and the historic riverside Lambeth Palace in London. His tenure will last until retirement at 70 or until he decides to move on.

FAVOURITES

The winner will be under pressure to prevent the Anglican world from being torn apart over homosexuality and same-sex unions. Greater tolerance on those issues among some in Britain and the United States has angered conservatives in areas with growing congregations, such as Nigeria.

One of the favourites to replace Williams is the Bishop of Durham Justin Welby, 56, a former oil executive who trained as a priest after the death of his infant daughter in a car crash.

He sits on a panel set up by the government to investigate the fixing of the Libor (interbank) borrowing rate.

Perhaps the best known candidate is the Archbishop of York John Sentamu, 63, a straight-talking traditionalist and the church's second most senior cleric. Born in Uganda, he fled to Britain after being detained and beaten under dictator Idi Amin.

He writes a column for Rupert Murdoch's top-selling Sun tabloid, a newspaper better known for its daily picture of a topless woman on page three.

Other frontrunners include the Bishop of Coventry Christopher Cocksworth, 53, a father of five who is a popular figure among more liberal members of the church.

The main traditionalist candidate is the Bishop of London Richard Chartres, 65, who opposed the blessing in Anglican churches of "civil partnerships", a formula that gives same-sex couples legal recognition.

The successor to the scholarly Williams will be enthroned in a grand ceremony at Canterbury Cathedral, where St Augustine began England's conversion to Christianity in 597 AD.

The Reverend George Pitcher, who advised Williams on public relations, said the next archbishop should reform the role to make it more manageable.

"The job as it currently stands can't be a job that anybody in their right mind would want to do," he told the BBC. "It's probably a debilitating and depressing prospect becoming Archbishop of Canterbury precisely because the job is undoable."

Hokkaido countryside sold for just Y1 yen per ... - Real Estate Japan

It may not be the most bustling of towns, but for those of you in the market for real estate, have we got a good deal for you.

Your own plot of land from just one yen per square meter. Yup, one yen.

Bizarrely, there?s no catch. No ?but it?s infested with rabid ferrets? or ?but you must spend the night in a haunted house with Rosie O?Donnell!? punchline.

The town of Chippubetsu in Hokkaido is genuinely offering habitable land for the incredible price of one single yen. And, as a result, it is receiving an unprecedented amount of attention from both the media and Internet users. Someone in Chippubetsu is getting a lot of pats on the back for coming up with this initiative, we?re sure.

The town, whose official population is listed as just 2,692 people (1,284 males to 1,408 females), has already received eight applications ? including three households who, thanks to the scheme, are able to move out of municipal housing ? claiming 12 of the 460-square-meter plots, but many more are still up for grabs.

Holiday, or second homes in Hokkaido are extremely popular, with many Japanese, particularly the retired and wealthy, spending the hotter months of the year up north in more temperate climes. Naturally, during Hokkaido?s long, snowy winters, many people return south to escape the cold, but, thanks to its abundant ski and snowboarding locations, Hokkaido sees a fair amount of tourism.

But were the Internet masses tempted by Chippubetsu?s rock-bottom land prices? Even at one yen, is the town too far out in the wilds for comfort? As you might expect, it?s something of a mixed bag.

?Living somewhere that cold on a budget would be tough,? chirped one bargain hunter.

?I might buy a plot and live in a tent beside a roaring campfire!? tweeted an excited outdoorsman, before another user doused the flames with the slightly pessimistic but well-founded theory ?And then you?d be bear food.?

But it isn?t all doom, gloom and satire on the forums.

One adventurer, at least, was incredibly keen about the bargain plots, commenting: ?This looks like fun. I was planning on moving to Brazil, but this could actually be quite a fun challenge,? while others simply couldn?t believe that land could possibly be sold at such a miniscule price, exclaiming: ?This is incredible. At first I thought it was just a joke, but, checking out Chippubetsu?s homepage, I see that it?s for real.?

Our own interest piqued, we took a peek at Chippubetsu?s homepage for ourselves. And we have to admit, we?re kind of taken with the little town.

Hot spring resorts; athletics grounds; a public rose garden; fresh, naturally-grown produce; a ?gate-ball? (croquet) course; an animal farm called ?Baa-baa Land.? You know, life might not be all that bad up in Chippubetsu, so long as we can get some high-speed Internet and the occasional decent coffee.

Among the many insights and the extensive information gained by those attending the 14th Annual Shared Ownership Investment Conference?(SOCIC) last week in Orlando, Florida, was information about the changing demographic of today?s timeshare owner. A very helpful overview of current buyers and owners was revealed in the Shared Resort Real Estate Ownership 2012: A Market Perspective.

This report covers a survey conducted by MMGY Global, involving 810 active leisure travelers who are considered to be a nationally representative sampling, and who met specific criteria regarding age and annual household income. The survey was conducted during this past June and July (2012). Among those surveyed, the average minimum annual household income was $ 50,000; they were between the ages of 25 and 64, and had traveled at least once for leisure purposes this past year, staying overnight, and going 75 miles or more from their home.

Peter C. Yesawich, Ph.D., vice chairman of MMGY Global said this of the report, ?The implications suggest that the preferred product offerings and services will continue to evolve with the shifting social values of today?s leisure travelers. The results also reveal that the concept of shared ownership aligns well with marketplace trends, which bodes well for continued industry growth.?

Here?s a profile of leisure travelers interested in buying timeshare, vacation ownership, or fractional ownership real estate:

  • Average age is 42.
  • 63 percent are married.
  • 40 percent have children who reside in the household full time.
  • He or she vacations, on average, 3.4 times per year (based on the past 12 months).
  • Typically sends $ 1,730 on lodging accommodations for leisure travel.
  • 80 percent of those surveyed who where current timeshare owners, preferred a beach or lake destination for vacationing.
  • 84 percent of those surveyed who where perspective timeshare buyers, prefer a beach or lake destination for vacationing.

Malcolm Turnbull

Malcolm Turnbull will speak to residents in Ocean Grove.

Shadow Minister for Communications and Broadband Malcolm Turnbull will visit Ocean Grove tomorrow to discuss improving the region?s internet and mobile phone coverage.

Mr Turnbull was invited to the afternoon tea by Liberal candidate for Corangamite Sarah Henderson, who is aiming to win the seat from Labor?s Darren Cheeseman at the next federal election.

Ms Henderson said residents would learn more about the Coalition?s plan to make high-speed broadband available in the electorate faster and cheaper than the federal government?s National Broadband Network.

?Despite having patchy and inadequate broadband coverage, the majority of the Corangamite electorate was completely ignored in the government?s recent NBN rollout,? she said.

?The afternoon will also be an opportunity to discuss difficulties in getting access to adequate internet or mobile phone coverage throughout the Corangamite electorate. Malcolm and I look forward to discussing these and other issues of concern to local residents.?

The NBN rollout map shows work to install the NBN will begin in and around Ocean Grove, Leopold and Torquay within the next three years.

Ms Henderson said Mr Turnbull would also speak at a communications and broadband forum she is hosting in Geelong tomorrow.

Mr Turnbull launched a national broadband survey yesterday but said the Coalition could not reveal its fully-costed alternative to the NBN until after the election.

The afternoon tea will be held at Club Grove, The Terrace, Ocean Grove from 3.30-4.30pm tomorrow. RSVP by calling 5243 1508 or emailing sarah.henderson@vic.liberal.org.au.
