Riding in style: The evolution of the popemobile

Alessandro Di Meo / EPA

Images of the automobiles that have transported popes over the years.

By Elizabeth Chuck, Staff Writer, NBC News

Comes outfitted in protective bullet-proof glass. Draws a crowd wherever it goes. A driver is included; gold trim is optional.

Popemobiles also include such amenities as a handrail to let the pope easily stand and wave while in motion, a built-in stereo and arctic-cool air conditioning.

Eight popes have had their own set of holy wheels since Pope Pius XI got a stretch 460 Nurburg edition Mercedes-Benz in 1930, but the eighth, Pope Francis -- known for?taking the bus to work?before he was named pope -- may not want all the frills and custom built-ins that popemobiles offer.?

By retiring, Benedict XVI has passed along a white armored Mercedes SUV, which has a white leather interior with gold trim and a white leather turret that can be raised by hydraulic lift high enough for crowds to see the pope, if he wants to sit. (For longer trips around Italy, Benedict enjoyed his own helicopter.) Bullet-proof?Plexiglas?that's strong enough to withstand explosions surrounds the turret on three sides. There's an emergency oxygen supply built in, according to?The Telegraph.?

"The pope must feel comfortable. People must be able to see him. People have traveled very far; they want to be able to get a good look at him," said Christoph Horn, Director of Global Communications of Mercedes-Benz, from Stuttgart, Germany. "This is about creating a comfortable and safe environment for the pope to travel in and be seen in.?

The pre-mobile
Popes didn't have to wait for the invention of automobiles to be mobile. For centuries, popes traveled by throne when going out on local outings. The popes were carried by 12 bearers (representing the 12 disciples of the church) as they moved through crowds, Ronald Rychlak, a University of Mississippi law school professor who has written numerous books on religion,?said.

Daimler

The first car used by a pope.

All that changed when Pope Pius XI got his Benz. The limousine was a gift from the car company, which would provide vehicles for many popes after that.

"Usually more than one vehicle was provided, especially for the popes in the 1930s," Horn said. "They were traveling a lot, so many popemobiles were built for them."

Back then, popes traveled in limousines with open tops, he said. Over the years, more than 12 different models of cars and trucks would be provided for popes. Pius XI himself ushered in a new era of pope cars in 1960 with a Mercedes 300D Landaulet, which had a throne that rose high in the back, The New York Times reported, before he switched to a 1964 Lincoln model. His successor, Pope Pope VI, went back to the preferred Mercedes brand a year later.

But don't call it 'popemobile'
When popes travel abroad for state visits, it's not always possible for the vehicles they use at home to make the journey with them. Instead, customized cars are prepared ahead of the visit, submitted for Vatican approval from the country he will visit.

"The primary level of security is assigned to the host nation,"?Rychlak said. "If they want to have something like a popemobile for a major parade, let's say they're doing Mass at Yankee stadium or something like that, they would have to make arrangements to ship something over, or that's the kind of situation where there may be a gift made to the pope" by a major car company.

That was how the car that officially became known for the first time as the "popemobile" came into existence: Pope John Paul II had visited Ireland in 1979, and a boxy yellow Ford Transit van awaited him as his chariot. Last November, The Telegraph reported an Irish businessman had acquired the van from the Dublin Wax Museum, where it had been since the papal visit, and was transforming it into a party bus.

Many other popemobiles have stayed in the countries they were used in. In 2008, Newsweek got a peek at the popemobile Benedict used for his U.S. tour, describing it as "by far the fanciest and sleekest papal car ever built ... The papal handlers can shift their passenger from zero to 60 in less than eight seconds, but the drivers probably won't exceed 10 mph along the parade routes."

In 2002, John Paul II asked the media to stop using the term "popemobile," insisting it sounded "undignified."

A clear need for better security
John Paul II survived an assassination attempt in 1981 while in St. Peter's Square. A Turkish man was later convicted of firing the shots, which punctured the pope's car and struck him four times. John Paul II survived, but it was clear his wide-open truck wouldn't suffice to protect him. From then on, bulletproof glass has encased popemobiles, although popes have occasionally ridden around without covering for brief periods.

A 1981 assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II in St. Peter's Square.

Since adding bulletproof glass, popemobiles have added other necessary features, including ultra-powerful air conditioning to cool down the glass dome that popes sit in, reports The Telegraph.

Other protection measures include heavy-metal reinforcement on the bottom of the vehicle as well as the other sides, and the driver is always a trusted longtime Vatican employee. There's no partition between the pope and his driver; a microphone enables him to broadcast messages to crowds through speakers outside the popemobile.

The current weighs five tons and was just presented to Benedict last December by Mercedes-Benz.

"We work with the members of the Vatican and with the people in charge of the garages of the Vatican," Horn said. "These are all individual vehicles that are built to specifications."

The new pope's desire to get up close and personal with his faithful has presented challenges for his security detail.

"The pope's going to want to be up close hugging and touching and meeting people and that's going to be a tremendous concern for his security people,"?Rychlak said. "His security forces have taken him aside, or probably already have, and are going to say, 'Holy Father, you're putting us in a horrible situation if you don't go along with these things.'"

They're used to having to say that, though: Benedict didn't always like the feeling of a "shield between him and the people,"?Rychlak said. Most popemobiles are designed so the glass can be lowered, though.

Air Force general picked for NATO post

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A senior Air Force general is being nominated to take over as commander of all U.S. and NATO forces in Europe.

Gen. Philip M. Breedlove is the top Air Force commander in Europe. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel says Breedlove is particularly well qualified. Hagel announced the nomination Thursday.

If confirmed, Breedlove would be the first Air Force general to hold the top NATO job since Joseph Ralston served in the post from 2000-2003.

Breedlove would succeed Navy Adm. James Stavridis, who has held the job since 2009.

President Barack Obama chose Breedlove after his first choice for the job, Marine Gen. John Allen, announced he would retire after 19 months commanding allied forces in Afghanistan because of his wife's health issues.

Asian giants tiptoe toward free trade deal

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? China, Japan and South Korea are inching ahead with talks for a free trade zone that would rival the European Union and North America in economic heft. Despite the achievement of setting aside their often acrimonious relations to begin negotiations, progress will be slow. An agreement to start talks took 10 years.

After three days of meetings in Seoul that finished Thursday, South Korea said officials agreed to hold two more rounds of negotiations this year, with the second meeting to be held in China either in June or July. Negotiations will cover goods, services and investment and might be extended to intellectual property rights and electronic commerce.

Striking an optimistic tone on the first day of talks, Japan's negotiator Koji Tsuruoka said the "integration of three economies which are very significant economies in this area as well as globally will provide very fruitful results to industries ... and to people."

Trade between the three Asian powers totaled $684 billion in 2011, an increase of more than five times from 1999, underlining Asia's growing weight in the world economy after more than two decades of breakneck growth in China and the earlier rise of Japan and South Korea as manufacturing powerhouses.

Those booming commercial ties are one of the few bright spots for relations among the three. The legacy of Japan's colonial occupation of South Korea until 1945 and its World War II-era atrocities in China has provided fertile ground for animosity.

Beijing and Tokyo's dispute over the sovereignty of East China Sea islands led last year to anti-Japanese riots in China and a damaging consumer boycott of Japanese autos and other goods. China and South Korea's relations have been strained over Beijing's continuing support for North Korea even as the North engages in threatening behavior and rhetoric.

Against that background, progress toward a free trade zone that would be the world's third largest could easily be interrupted by any flare-up in political tensions. A separate Japan-South Korea trade deal has languished since talks were halted in 2004 as they could not narrow disagreements over opening agricultural trade. Negotiating a three-way deal among countries at different stages of development, and each with industries lobbying for protection from competition is by itself a complicated affair.

"Usually, it takes around one to three years at the least to conclude FTA talks with a large trading partner, but I think the ongoing talks may take some more time, considering the importance and size of the involved countries and the fact that they are three-way negotiations," Choi Kyong-lim, South Korea's chief negotiator, told reporters according to Yonhap.

The talks between China, Japan and South Korea come amid a slew of moves to lower trade barriers as nations seek to reinvigorate economic growth that is still lagging in the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis.

South Korea, which already has free trade pacts with the European Union and its U.S. military ally, is separately negotiating a trade deal with China. As part of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's policies to lift the Japanese economy out of two decades of stagnation, Japan has started negotiations with the EU and is seeking to join talks for a Pacific trade pact known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership that is being led by the U.S.

"For 10 years we discussed a China-Japan-Korea FTA and nothing happened. China and Korea have very high tariffs. But as soon as Mr. Abe said Japan will join TPP, then China and Korea were keen to restart talks," said Motoshige Itoh, a government adviser and professor at Tokyo University.

Some experts see China's possible deal with Japan and South Korea as its attempt to counter the U.S. which is turning its foreign and economic policy focus to Asia. They urge South Korea to also join the U.S.-led Pacific trade deal to balance already heavy reliance on trade with China.

"China's intention is to first form a Northeast Asian economic cooperation that excludes the U.S. while Japan can't sit still as South Korea advances to the Chinese market with Korea-China free trade talks," said Heo Yoon, a professor at Sogang University Graduate School of International Studies.

Despite concerns about greater competition in some industries, the South Korean government said a free trade bloc with China and Japan would sharply lower non-tariff barriers and boost its exports to both countries.

The government-funded Korea Institute for International Economic Policy estimates as much as a 0.44 percentage point addition to South Korea's annual growth rate during the five years after the deal took effect.

The auto industry will be a particularly sensitive issue for South Korea where automakers and unions are likely to lobby vociferously against greater Japanese penetration of a market that domestic producers such as Hyundai Motor Co. dominate with 90 percent of sales.

South Korean cars are not popular in Japan while Korean consumers have lately been snapping Japanese vehicles such as Nissan's Cube. South Korea shipped just $33 million worth of vehicles to Japan in 2012 while importing $523 million Japanese cars, according to Korea International Trade Association.

"We are concerned about the free trade deal with Japan," said Kim Tae-nyen, an executive director at Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association. "We don't expect much gain from a deal with China" as Korean automakers already sell locally produced vehicles in China.

Agriculture is also expected to be a sticking point in negotiations as both South Korea and Japan must contend with powerful farmer lobbies worried that cheap Chinese agricultural products will flood domestic markets.

China, meanwhile, is likely to seek lower tariffs on its agricultural products and labor-intensive manufactured goods. But trade experts said Beijing will be reluctant to open its service industries or to allow a freer inflow of foreign capital ? areas in which South Korea wants to remove barriers.

Easton to hold special town meeting April 1 | Easton Courier

Easton sealThe Board of Selectmen has scheduled a Special Town Meeting on Monday, April 1, at 8 p.m. at the Samuel Staples Elementary School cafeteria, 515 Morehouse Road, Easton, to:

? Discuss and approve a special appropriation in the amount of $116,927.37 from the unassigned fund balance to the Police Department as recommended by the Board of Finance.

? Discuss and approve an ordinance providing property tax abatements for the surviving spouses of firefighters and police officers who die in the line of duty.

The special appropriation for the Police Department is needed because the patrol account was under-funded in the current year budget, necessitating over-time pay, First Selectman Tom Herrmann said. He said the 2013-14 budget would increase patrol funding in an effort to avoid a similar situation in the next fiscal year.

Following is the proposed tax abatement ordinance:

An ordinance providing for the abatement of real property taxes for surviving spouses of police officers and firefighters

It is the purpose of this Ordinance to honor a police officer or firefighter who dies while in the performance of his or her duties for the Town of Easton and to ease the resulting financial burden of his/her surviving spouse.

This Ordinance is enacted pursuant to Connecticut General Statutes Section 12-81x which authorizes a municipality to provide for the abatement of property taxes with respect to real property owned and occupied as the principal residence of the surviving spouse of a police officer or firefighter who dies while in the performance of such officer?s or firefighter?s duties.

Definitions: For purposes of this Ordinance, the following terms shall have the following meanings:

The term ?firefighter? shall be defined as any person who is a duly designated member of Easton Volunteer Fire Company Number 1, Inc. (?Fire Company?) or an employee of the Easton Fire Department (?Fire Department?).

The term ?police officer? shall be defined as a duly sworn member of the Easton Police Department.

The term ?surviving spouse? shall be defined as a person who was a resident of the Town of Easton and married to or partner in a civil union with a police officer or a firefighter at the time of the police officer?s or firefighter?s death.

With regard to firefighters, the term ?duties? shall be defined as duties performed while traveling to, at, or returning from fires or fire-related calls, answering alarms of fires or calls for mutual aid assistance, while traveling to, at, or returning from tests or trials of any apparatus or equipment normally used by the Fire Department and/or Fire Company, while instructing or being instructed in fire duties, and while performing any other duty ordered to be performed by a superior or a commanding officer in the Fire Company or Fire Department.

With regard to police officers, the term ?duties? shall be defined as any action which a police officer is obligated or authorized by law, rule, regulation or written condition of service to perform.

In accordance with Section 12-81x of the Connecticut General Statutes, there is hereby established an abatement of 100% of the property taxes due with respect to real property owned and occupied as the principal residence of the surviving spouse of a police officer or a firefighter who dies while in the performance of such officer?s or firefighter?s duties.

The tax abatement program adopted hereunder shall apply to all such property taxes due as of January 1, 2013 and thereafter.

The tax abatement in any given case shall remain in effect for so long as the surviving spouse occupies the property as his or her primary residence and holds legal title to the property. If a surviving spouse subsequently purchases a different property in the Town of Easton as his or her primary residence and all other qualifying criteria are satisfied, the tax abatement shall apply to the newly purchased property. The tax abatement may only apply to one property at any time.

Upon the death of any person receiving tax abatement pursuant to this Ordinance, the tax abatement hereunder shall end 90 days thereafter.

If a person entitled to tax abatement hereunder conveys legal title to the property with respect to which the tax abatement hereunder has been granted, the tax abatement shall terminate as to that property as of the date of the conveyance and the non-qualifying grantee of such property shall henceforth be liable for the payment of municipal taxes on the property in accordance with the provisions of Section 12-81a of the Connecticut General Statutes.

In the event title to the property with respect to which tax abatement has been granted hereunder is held in the name of a qualifying surviving spouse and one or more other non-qualifying persons, the subject abatement shall be limited to the same proportion of the total tax due as the surviving spouse?s ownership interest bears to the total. In such an instance, the surviving spouse must make application to the Easton Tax Assessor to make a determination as to the percentage of assessed taxes to be abated based upon his or her proportionate ownership interest before any such abatement may be granted or continued.

The Tax Collector and the Tax Assessor shall prescribe such forms and procedures as they deem necessary to implement this Ordinance. The Assessor, in addition, shall take steps as necessary to satisfactorily establish the facts as to the surviving spouse?s ownership interest in the property, on an initial and continuing periodic basis.

The Tax Collector shall maintain a cumulative record of all taxes abated in accordance with this Ordinance.

If such surviving spouse remarries or enters into another civil union, the abatement shall terminate as of the date of the remarriage or civil union.

For purposes of this Ordinance, police officers and firefighters shall not be deemed to be in the performance of their respective duties while commuting ?portal to portal? between residence and work except for members of the Fire Company responding to a fire call, members of the Fire Department responding to a fire call or a call back while not on a regular shift, or members of the Police Department responding to a call.

If a police officer or a firefighter who does not reside in the Town of Easton dies while in the performance of his or duty, a determination shall be made as to whether the surviving spouse would have been eligible for benefits under this Ordinance if the spouse had resided in Easton. This determination shall be made by a special committee appointed by the Board of Selectmen and consisting of one member of the Board of Selectmen, the Tax Assessor, one member each of the Police Commission and Fire Commission and one member of the Board of Finance. If it is determined that the surviving spouse would have been eligible for abatement under this Ordinance if the spouse had been an Easton resident, the special committee shall recommend to the Board of Selectmen that a payment be made to the surviving spouse?s town of residence for the real property taxes assessed to the surviving spouse. The special committee will meet annually to determine the ongoing eligibility of the surviving spouse and to make a recommendation to the Board of Selectmen based upon its findings.

This Ordinance will take effect retroactive to January 1, 2013.

Clashes in Lebanon as PM Mikati resignation accepted

By Erika Solomon

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Clashes were reported in Lebanon on Saturday as outgoing prime minister Najib Mikati called for a "salvation" caretaker government to take over, a day after he resigned due to a political standoff with the Hezbollah movement.

Local media reported that President Michel Suleiman accepted Mikati's resignation, a move which could plunge Lebanon into further turmoil and uncertainty three months before a planned parliamentary election.

The politically volatile country is struggling to cope with a spillover of violence and a wave of refugees from the two-year-old civil war in Syria, the country's larger neighbor which has close ties to the Iranian-backed Hezbollah.

Sporadic clashes erupted for a third day in Lebanon's northern port city of Tripoli. Sniper fire killed one man and wounded two others, residents said.

Mikati's resignation on Friday came after a ministerial meeting was deadlocked by a dispute with Hezbollah.

The Shi'ite militant and political movement has dominated Lebanese politics in recent years and helped put Mikati into office after toppling the previous government.

"Now it is important for dialogue to begin and for a salvation government to be established during this difficult period," Mikati wrote on his official Twitter page after handing in his resignation to the president.

"I thank God that I left office the same way I came in, with integrity."

Hezbollah opposed extending the term of a senior security official, Major General Ashraf Rifi, and the creation of an oversight body for the planned June election, which may now be delayed after the collapse of Mikati's government.

Rifi, head of Lebanon's internal security forces, is due to retire early next month. He, like Mikati, is a Sunni Muslim from Tripoli, and is distrusted by Hezbollah.

Putting together a caretaker government could take months. It took Mikati five months to put together his government after he became prime minister in 2011 when Hezbollah and its partners brought down the unity government of Saad al-Hariri.

But tensions over Syria have put him at odds with the group that brought him to power and which strongly backs President Bashar al-Assad in the Syrian civil war.

Under Lebanon's division of power, the prime minister must be a Sunni Muslim, the president a Maronite Christian and the speaker of parliament a Shi'ite Muslim.

Former Prime Minister Fouad Siniora, a close political ally of Hariri who had frequently called for Mikati to step down, said the resignation "opens the possibility of fresh dialogue" between Lebanon's political camps.

Mikati had sought to distance his country - which fought its own 15-year-long civil war - from Syria's strife. But in the ex-prime minister's home city of Tripoli, two people died in clashes on Friday between militants supporting opposing sides of the Syria conflict.

The influx of Syrian refugees, as well as Lebanon's own political divisions, have caused a sharp slowdown in Lebanon's economy and a 67 percent surge in its budget deficit last year.

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called for calm in a statement after Mikati's resignation.

"At this challenging time for the region, the Secretary-General calls on all parties Lebanon to remain united behind the leadership of President Suleiman," the statement said.

"He also calls on them to work together with the institutions of the State to maintain calm and stability, to respect Lebanon's policy of disassociation (in Syria) ... and to support the role of the Lebanese Armed Forces in sustaining national unity, sovereignty and security."

Iraq War at 10: for families of wounded, a mounting cost

The 10-year anniversary of America?s war in Iraq came and went with little fanfare this week, but in homes across the country, veterans ? and the family members who care for them ? continue to struggle mightily with the wounds of battle.

Two new studies highlight their plight. On a Friday afternoon this month, the Army quietly released a Pentagon Inspector General?s report which found ?non-compliance? on the part of the Army in processing soldiers? disability claims.

The report issued a further rebuke, noting that the method for filing disability claims is ?increasing the workload and confusion for all participants and leaders concerned.?

RECOMMENDED: Are you smarter than a US Marine? Take the recruitment quiz

That navigating the veterans? disabilities claims process is confusing has long been known. The problem, veterans advocates say, is that it is not appreciably improving for the 32,000 troops who were wounded in the war.

A report released this month from the Center for Investigative Reporting, ?The War Comes Home: Washington?s Battle Against America?s Veterans,? finds that some 600,000 claims of wounded veterans from the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Vietnam are backlogged as service members await an answer from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

By way of illustration, the ?excessive? stacks of paper and claims folders piled around the offices of a VA regional office in Winston-Salem, N.C., for example, were so great that it ?appeared to have the potential to compromise the [structural] integrity of the building,? according to an August 2012 report from the VA?s Office of the Inspector General.

Indeed, these heaps of paper ? an estimated 37,000 claims folders stored on top of file cabinets ? not only led to a predictable ?increased risk of loss or misfiling,? but they also exceeded the load-bearing capacity of the building by 39 pounds per square foot, according to the IG report.

Many of these claims awaiting response are made by family members and spouses requesting help caring for some of these wounded returning from war, says Terri Tanielian, lead author of a RAND Corp. report on military caregivers released earlier this month.

Indeed, these spouses and ? in the case of unmarried troops ? parents who care for troops returning from war ?often toil long hours with little support, putting them at risk for physical, emotional, and financial harm,? according to the report, which estimates that there are as many as one million such caregivers throughout the United States.

?These are the people that give the help with dressing, feeding, bathing, toileting these returning veterans,? says Ms. Tanielian says.

The role that these military caregivers play ?can place stress and burdens on individual caregivers so much that they experience deteriorations of their own,? often in the form of ?higher rates of emotional stress and anxiety,? Tanielian adds.

They grapple with concerns about income loss, since many of them have to reduce the number of hours that they can work outside the home, or leave the workforce altogether, she notes. ?The set of burdens caregivers take on as a result of spending time in their caregiving role can accumulate and cascade.?

The problem, the RAND report warns, is that there is ?no national strategy? for supporting these ad hoc caregivers, who are often younger women with small children at home.

What?s more, beyond those two key details, she adds, ?little is known about them.?

That needs to change, she adds. ?If we?re going to make sure that veterans can have a successful reintegration after they return from war, we need to tend to the needs of the caregivers, too.?

Germany wins 3-0 at Kazakhstan in WCup qualifier

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:44 p.m. ET March 22, 2013

ASTANA, Kazakhstan (AP) -Thomas Mueller scored one goal and played a role in two others as Germany cruised to a 3-0 win in Kazakhstan in a World Cup qualifier on Friday.

The victory leaves Germany in control of Group C of European qualifying, ahead of Sweden. Germany will host Kazakhstan on Tuesday in Nuremberg.

"It was our job to win here," Germany coach Joachim Loew said. "The game was decided by halftime. We moved the ball well in the first half but it wasn't easy to find space."

Mueller played a part in Bastian Schweinsteiger's 20th-minute goal, Mario Goetze netted in the 22nd from a pass by Mueller, who completed the win in the 74th.

Germany played Goetze as a "false nine" because the squad's only striker, Mario Gomez, injured his hamstring in practice and had to sit out the match. Several other regulars were also missing because of injury.

The match kicked off at midnight local time on the artificial pitch at Astana Arena.

Germany had practiced on a similar surface back home and took control from the start as expected, scoring a pair of goals inside a span of three minutes.

Schweinsteiger connected with a pass from Mesut Oezil inside the box, controlled the ball well to shake off two defenders and sent a shot that glanced off the chest of Mueller into the net.

"I think I'll give him 20 percent of the first goal," Mueller said after he and Schweinsteiger watched a replay.

Mueller used a mix-up between the Kazakhstan goalkeeper and a defender to roll the ball to Goetze, who fired inside the roof of the net.

Kazakhstan gave the Germans more of a fight in the second half, but Loew's team had also switched down a gear.

Kazakhstan substitute Ulan Konysbaev struck the crossbar in the 69th with a tremendous shot from the edge of the area. One minute later, Schweinsteiger was booked for tripping Konysbaev and will be suspended for the match in Nuremberg.

Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was tested in the 71st when Heinrich Schmidtgal, who plays for bottom-place Greuther Fuerth in the Bundesliga, shot from the left side of the box. Neuer stretched his right arm to turn the ball away.

Shortly after that, Goetze and Oezil combined to set up Mueller for Germany's third goal.

"We took the three points and that's what's important," Mueller said. "We can put it behind us now and look ahead."

DreamWorks Animation Has A Lot On The Line ... - Business Insider

DreamWorks Animation has a lot to prove when its next movie comes out this weekend.??

"The Croods," starring Nicholas Cage and Emma Stone as members of a Caveman family, will be the first feature released since the studio's domestic box-office bomb, "The Rise of the Guardians" last November.?

Centered around holiday characters, "Guardians" opened to the studio's weakest performance since 2006.??

Analysts anticipated the film would earn in the neighborhood of $60 million. Rather, it grossed nearly three times less with $23.8 million.?

As an immediate result, the company's stock dropped nearly five percent the following Monday. In the long-run, though the film picked up some steam overseas, the film's poor performance domestically resulted in an $87 million write-down.??

Then in February, the animation studio altered its release schedule heavily.??

Originally scheduled November film "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" has been pushed back until next March and another animation, "Me & My Shadow," has been put back into developmental stages.??

YouTube

DreamWorks Animation's most recent release, "Rise of the Guardians," resulted in an $87 million write-down.

When the company's fourth quarter earnings were released, DreamWorks Animation reported a loss of $83 million and announced 350 layoffs.?

That leaves all eyes on "The Croods" this weekend.??

Analysts have the film projected to open between $38 million and $45 million.??

Stifel analyst Benjamin Mogil predicts the film could earn $150 million domestically and another $300 million overseas.?

Those numbers are 20 percent below the $60.3 million opening of last summer's "Madagascar 3." Current tracking for "The Croods" is more in line with the "Shrek" spinoff "Puss in Boots."?

If the film performs well, then it will prove the "Guardians" debut was simply an anomaly.??

However, if it fails to meet analyst's estimates, and teeters close to DreamWorks Animation's Thanksgiving debut, the studio could have a larger problem on its hands with only one other film ? about a racing snail ? out later this year.??

Right now, there are two major problems DreamWorks Animation has to overcome: it's over-inflated film budgets and its?heavy reliance on animated features to produce most of the company's revenue.?

The studio's immense budgets puts an insane amount of pressure on DreamWorks Animation to make sure every one of its features are box-office gold.?

"They spend as if every movie they produce is a new 'Shrek,' but it's unreasonable to spend as if you are making big, big tentpoles when you really aren't,"?Vasily Karasyov, an analyst for Susquehanna Financial Group, told The Wrap.?

Here are the previous estimated budgets and openings for its last five films:
?

Even the studio knows its films are gambles.??

From DreamWorks Animation's latest 10K SEC filing:??

"Our success is primarily dependent on audience acceptance of our films, which is extremely difficult to predict and, therefore, inherently risky ? Our business is currently substantially dependent upon the success of a limited number of film releases each year and the unexpected delay or commercial failure of any one of them could have a material adverse effect on our financial results and cash flows."?

The company reported it relies on the performances of its features to earn most of its revenue:?

"We currently derive a significant percentage of our revenue from a single source, the production of animated family entertainment, and our lack of a diversified business could adversely affect us."

Translation: any film DreamWorks Animation puts out can be a huge success story or a potential disaster for the company.?

This weekend, "The Croods" has?a lot in its favor to perform well at theaters.

It will be the only animated kids' film out
The Weinstein Company's kid flick "Escape From Planet Earth" will be heading out of the box-office top ten this week during its sixth week in theaters.

Disney's "Oz," meanwhile, will be in its third week at the box office. After grossing $41.3 million last weekend, if it continues to follow the trend of similar film "Alice in Wonderland," it should take in somewhere around the range of $25-$30 million this weekend.

The other two big releases this weekend are the Tina Fey and Paul Rudd rom-com, "Admission," and a Gerard Butler action thriller, "Olympus Has Fallen," as competition.

Positive ticket sales
As of Wednesday, "The Croods" was Fandango's number one selling movie representing 31 percent of daily ticket sales.?

The film is currently outpacing ticket sales 2009's "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs." That film went on to earn $30.3 million opening weekend.

The only thing that could prevent the DreamWorks' cavemen family from a good weekend is the poor box-office performance of the year so far.?

Hi. I'm using DatetimePicke on my SaleInfo form, for inserting the Date and Time of Sale. The dataType of Sale_Date field in SQL Server 2005 is DateTime. I set the DTP format property to short and then to its original default to Long but in both the cases, when i insert the data so only date is displayed validly but the time is fix to 12:00:00 AM. In Addition to this, i changed its value property (which is originally 3/22/2013 2:59 PM, but i removed the time from the value property). Now please tell me that what is this problem, why the current date and time both are not inserting properly? Please guide me.

if you don't supply a time to a datetime it defaults to 12am if you want the time just use the .Value of your datetimepicker upon insertion into the database. Value will put the current time in

OK, DateTimePicker. It's used to hold a well, a date and time (or a TimeStamp if you prefer)

As a developer, you have access to a datetime structure which is what is returned from the DataTimePicker's .Value property.

This means that you can break it down even further by specifying .Date which appears to be what you're doing.

Assume you have a datetimepicker with the following showing in the textfield "03/22/2013"

    DateTimePicker1.Value will be equal to #03/22/2013 09:17:00 AM#
DateTimePicker1.Value.Date will be equal to #03/22/2013#
DateTimePicker1.Text will be equal to "03/22/2013"

When you ONLY put a date into a database field that has a type of Date|DateTime|TimeStamp the field will replace a non-existant time with midnight

If you need a time then as you can see above, passing the value will place the current time into the field without changing the format of your datetimepicker.

So change the input into the database for the datetimepicker to .Value not .Value.Date

Dear Charlie. I deleted the old DTP and add a new one on my form and then started insertion of data so you know i just change the format to short and did nothing to its value property and when i check the last inserted records, so its fulfilling my need i.e. the current date and current time of insertion is there in DataBase. I think the problem i am facing with my old DTP is that i modify the value property and removed the time from it on design mode, therefore it inserts the fix time i.e. "12:00". In this case if i bring the value property to its default value, on which it is, when it is added first time on form.

or in other case, as you mentioned.

I want this value back in value property #03/22/2013 09:17:00 AM#. I am totally baffle that what to do now, Charlie. I am sorry but i'm not understanding anything.. :dontgetit::dontgetit:

If I remember correctly, you are inserting these from a DataTable that you create and populate with the entry. Then you loop through the datatable and insert the field into the database. Is that correct?

If that is correct, look at where you're inserting the date into the database and make sure that you are also inserting time.

yes its correct. Yes time is available for all of the records. But with some records, the correct time is available and for some records the fix time i.e. 12:00 Am or PM.

Wealthfront, The Investing Service That Has Made Me Money ...

Wealthfront is one of my favorite startups out there today ? because it has actually made me money. I?m not alone. The automated investments company has been growing its user base by 20 percent every month, because it cuts out traditional mutual funds and investment advisors and charges its users a very low fee for returns that have been beating the Street.

Now it?s aiming at the sluggish and shady finance industry with a $20 million second round of venture funding led by Mike Volpi of Index Ventures, Chamath Palihapitiya of The Social+Capital Partnership and Reid Hoffman of Greylock Partners ? plus a large group of angel investors including Matt Mullenweg, Andy Dunn, Adam D?Angelo, Michael Schroepfer, Hunter Walk, Cipora Herman and Satya Patel.

My personal story is pretty typical of why the company has been doing so well.

After Inside Network got acquired in May of 2011 ? and after I?d paid off all the taxes and a scary credit card debt from my previous, failed startup ? I was stuck trying to figure out what to do with the money I had left. I talked to some financial advisors who recommended various packages that promised uninteresting returns, along with fees that looked to zero out any of those gains. I sat on the problem for months, unsure of what to do.

I?d seen Wealthfront launch at the end of 2011 and was curious (it was promising to solve my exact problem), but I only got around to trying it last November after it added an online wire transfer option that didn?t require me to spend hours filling out transfer papers at my bank. Well, and also, once I became confident enough in the direction of the U.S. and world economies that I thought investing would be worth it.

I went through its onboarding flow by directing its software to follow a conservative investment strategy fitting to my situation. Wealthfront picked mostly exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for U.S., foreign and emerging market stocks, along with bonds, real estate and natural resources.

I began making money from it immediately, no doubt benefiting from the particularly positive mood that many markets have been in since late last year.

By February I was like, hey this is pretty great, so I invested a smaller amount and directed Wealthfront to max out the risk on that account.

Today, nearly four months after starting to use the service, my conservative investment is up 4.4 percent and my risky one 5.2 percent. This might not look as good as the crazy numbers you see on benchmarks like the S&P 500, but as the company discusses here, it?s basically impossible to benchmark diversified portfolios like what Wealthfront offers.

Founder Andy Rachleff tells me that about a quarter of its users added additional money last month. And these people aren?t just 20- and 30-somethings like me who are fortunate enough to have the problem of investing hard-earned returns from their stints at successful startups.

Wealthfront has been growing through word of mouth, he says, as well as a rewards-type program for users who get their friends on board. About a third come through the latter mechanism. If you get somebody in, you get $5,000 of your money managed for free and they get $10,000 managed free. Note that Adam Nash, a top Silicon Valley product manager who joined after a great run at LinkedIn, is going to be focused on growth going forward.

In general, the company?s fees are set up to undermine the models of incumbent investment services like Fidelity, Schwab, and any other mutual fund investor or financial advisor. It charges a monthly rate based on an annual 0.25 percent fee, which compares quite favorably to the quotes I received from professionals ? along the lines of 2.5 percent for a massive minimum required investment.

The low fees are only the beginning of what Wealthfront offers. Another feature is automated tax-loss harvesting for any account worth at least $100,000, which it added last year. If you make a profit on parts of that account?s portfolio, it?ll reinvest it and avoid taxes on the gains by doing so.

The company also sometimes makes larger changes to how it handles your money.

Earlier this month it adjusted all user portfolios to include a much broader range of bonds, as well as the addition of retirement accounts (allowing long-term investors to avoid yearly taxes). The expected gains from these changes, which were masterminded by the company?s legendary Chief Investment Officer Burt Markiel, come out to about 0.5 percent per year.

Where to now? Rachleff thinks he can carve out a solid chunk of the approximately $12.5 trillion individual investor industry in the U.S. A founding partner at top venture firm Benchmark beginning in 1995 and a Stanford Graduate School of Business lecturer since 2004, Rachleff is also a student of the real disruption going on here. He?s aiming for anyone who can?t afford the high requirements of most professional investors.

He says the company will be using the additional $20 million to invest in more improvements to the core product, as well as a major push for more growth.

The company previously raised a total of $10.5 million from a big group of angels, as well as DAG Ventures, beginning in 2008 when it began life as kaChing, which Rachleff described in an essay for us as being a not-so-disruptive social investing service.

[Update: There are competitors out there, that create a software layer on top of ETFs and other assets, that I haven't used, and frankly hadn't heard about despite looking around and despite some of them being covered extensively on TechCrunch (yes, our search features are weak). One of them is Betterment. There's a nice debate between Wealthfront, Betterment, and various other competitors over on Quora. I'm personally going to try using Betterment as well and see how it works for me. I'm not taking back anything I said about Wealthfront, but I'll do more posts on the issue as I try stuff out, and if you're looking for options... read the Quora thread as a good primer.]

Wealthfront combines world-class financial expertise and leading edge technology to provide sophisticated investment management at prices affordable for everyone. The company is headquartered in Palo Alto, California, and received funding from DAG Ventures and such angel investors as Marc Andreessen, Ben Horowitz and Jeff Jordan.

Strategy Analytics: iCloud, Dropbox and Amazon top cloud media in the US

Strategy Analytics iCloud, Dropbox and Amazon top cloud media in the US

We often focus on market share for hardware, but cloud media services increasingly dictate our lives after the devices have reached our bags and pockets. Wouldn't it be nice to know who rules the online media landscape? According to Strategy Analytics' just-published study from the fall, it's Apple's iCloud and iTunes Match that are top dogs in the US at a combined 27 percent of usage -- a not entirely surprising lead when Apple has pushed hard on iCloud's media syncing since iOS 5, and has large swaths of market share in MP3 players and tablets, not just smartphones.

There's a considerably tougher fight involved for just about everyone else, however, including Google. Dropbox and Amazon Cloud Player are almost neck-and-neck at 17 and 15 percent respectively, while Google Drive holds just 10 percent. Music is clearly the driving force, Strategy Analytics says: when audio represents 45 percent of the content on a generic platform like Dropbox, companies ignore tunes at their own peril. Just don't confuse market share with absolute popularity. A full 55 percent of those asked hadn't used a cloud media service at all, which suggests that there's a long road to travel before we're all streaming and syncing our collections.
