PITTSBURGH ? Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett's plan for the state's natural gas boom would let counties impose a fee on drilling to help pay to regulate it and fix any environmental damage.
Corbett included the fee as part of a broader plan released Monday.
His plan would allow an impact fee to be imposed in a well's first year. The fee would generate an estimated $120 million in the first full year and $195 million by the sixth year.
Most of the money would remain in drilling communities, while 25 percent would go to the state for environmental protection and other needs.
Pennsylvania is the only major gas-producing state in the country that doesn't tax gas production.
Drilling critics say the gas extraction process can contaminate groundwater. The industry insists it's safe.
