Sure, today is Valentine?s Day, but February of 2012 also marks the milestone 50th anniversary of a rather significant event in electronic gaming: The first public release of the game Spacewar!, developer by some rogue MIT students that were essentially looking for a better way to show off a new ?microcomputer? their department had recently obtained.
So while you carouse in merriment or perhaps bitterly angst the day away, consider taking a moment of solemn respect to recognize Spacewar! for not only its incredible technical accomplishment, but also how it served to accelerate gaming progress. Seriously: Without Spacewar!, we might still be playing 64-bit games and not have iPhones yet.
