Come to Senior Expo on May 20 in Bangor ? Health & Fitness ...

Get a red pen and circle Friday, May 20, on your calendar. You don?t want to miss the fifth?annual Senior Expo at the Spectacular Event Center in Bangor. Doors open promptly at 9 a.m.?and then the fun begins.

There will be more than 70 exhibitors displaying everything from home health care?to travel to electric candles and bathroom remodels to medical supply to insurance to senior?housing to jewelry. The chef at Winterberry Heights will make smoothies for attendees, as well.

Each attendee will receive a ticket that, once filled out, will be put in a bin for the drawings for door prizes. There will be dozens of door prizes from the vendors, and best of all, you don?t need to be present to win. There will be big easels in the lobby with the winners names listed as they are drawn.

Bangor Metro magazine, a partner of Senior Expo, will pass out their latest issue free.

There also will be numerous health screenings such as vision tests, blood pressure?checks, cholesterol and glucose tests and fall-risk assessments. These assessments, performed by the physical therapy department at Husson University and trained EAAA staff, will give you an opportunity to have your risk of falling examined.

They?ll put you through the paces to determine your risk level for taking a tumble and give you information to take to your health care provider. This is done as part of the Step by Step fall prevention program.

Once you get your health status checked out, head to the Eastern Area Agency on?Aging?s State Health Insurance Assistance Program table and have a chat with one of?our SHIP volunteers about your benefits. They will answer questions, give you information and, if you wish, will make an appointment to meet with you at EAAA offices to delve into your situation?and possibly save you some money.

Also on hand will be the Triad Drug Drop-Off box where you can deposit your expired?no-longer-needed medications. Bring all the drugs that you no longer use so they can be disposed of properly. It is very important to get these prescriptions out of the house,?lest you take them by mistake or a grandchild gets into them. Please don?t flush them. It is really?horrible for the water supply.

A word about parking. Last year?s Senior Expo was very busy and parking was a?problem, but we think we have come up with the perfect solution. Overflow parking will be?behind the Airport Mall in their back lot. Free shuttle buses from EAAA, Sunbury Village and Winterberry Heights Assisted Living and Memory Care will chauffer you right to the Expo?door in a jiffy.

These buses will circulate all day along with the EAAA van. Just park your?car on the Griffin Road side of the Airport Mall and board the bus if you cannot find parking at?Spectacular Event Center. Also, all shuttle riders will receive a coupon worth 10 percent off at Johnson Florist in the Airport Mall, good on Expo day.

There will be delicious refreshments available for Expo attendees. Truly, the Spectacular Event Center staff makes some of the best cookies in the area. And don?t worry about the calories, as you will burn them off by visiting all the exhibitors.

Lots to do and see ? and it?s all free. The Senior Expo is brought to you by Eastern Area Agency on Aging and Penquis and is sponsored exclusively by Martin?s Point Health Care.

Note: the George Hale Silver Frame Awards will not be presented during this year?s Senior?Expo.
