Education systems place a high emphasis on maintaining the grade point average coupled with good behavior and a colorful extra curricular portfolio. Despite these good intentions being translated into processes, one often poses a question on what content and skills should schools teach to churn out individuals who are able and worthy to take on life. As the future generation, the aim is that they do not need to go through the same cycle of mistakes made by the previous ones. Although history can often be boring and dry to the many not inclined to remember dates, places and names, the past serves as a reflection to chart one?s course ahead. Driving without a rear view mirror is not impossible but certainly much easier and safer for all parties concerned.
Since the individual tends to become busy as a bee the moment he or she enters schooling age, it is imperative that this budding soul be equipped with life skills to literally get through life. As schoolwork hits the student fast and furious in the form of homework, assignments, projects, tests, exams, quizzes, sports meets, band practice and many more, the overwhelmed student needs to be taught how to organize a busy schedule into manageable chunks. As one systematically cuts through steak to consume it, the same is done with work.
Figuring out what content and skills should schools teach to their students continues to be a challenge. As the curriculum seeks to keep up with the constantly changing world, often times, playing catch-up becomes a pain for all. Thankfully, some things have not changed much since its inception. Music is an excellent example in reaching out to all races and religions, customs and cultures as tones and rhythms are the same all over. One not skilled to read, write, play or sing can still develop an appreciation for it. As music soothes, it also brings differing groups to common ground thus allowing bonds of friendship to grow and seal. Cooperation and conflict within a group develops the principle and practice of teamwork and thought process. These life skills equip the young to face a future of positive and negative interaction with colleagues, business partners, suppliers and others.
Deteriorating health statistics are growing concerns as couch potatoes, web devotees and gadget fanatics forego physical exercise. Nurturing interest in sports and fitness whilst in school, students have a better chance of maturing into healthy adults in body, mind, soul and spirit.
