There?s an old saying that if something happens once, it?s a fluke. If it happens twice, it?s coincidence. If it happened three times, then it is a trend.

In the three summers that GM Brian Burke has been in charge of the Maple Leafs, they have been unable to acquire an impact player via unrestricted free agency.

Burke has done what he could to improve the club by bringing in depth players like Fran?ois Beauchemin, Michael Komisarek, Colton Orr, Colby Armstrong, Clarke MacArthur, Brett Lebda and Tim Connolly, but true difference makers Phil Kessel and Dion Phaneuf were brought in by way of blockbuster trades.

The likelihood of attracting someone consequential on July 1 is decreasing with each year, as most teams continue to lock up their quality players before they get within a sniff of free agency.

It was particularly prevalent last summer, as every couple weeks another potential member of the 2011 free-agent crop dropped off the list. Zdeno Chara, Joe Thornton, Patrice Bergeron, Mikko Koivu and David Backes all signed long-term extensions, which dramatically affected the frenzy that began a month ago. Had those players been available, it is unlikely that Brad Richards, Christian Ehrhoff and Ville Leino would have been in a position to demand the absurdly overpriced deals they eventually signed.

The Blackhawks continued the trend yesterday as they signed forward Patrick Sharp to a five-year contract extension for $ 29.5 Million. Sharp would have likely been at the top of most teams wish lists next July. With New Jersey?s Zach Parise well-positioned to be the Brad Richards of next summer, the other top names include Alexander Semin, Shane Doan, Dustin Penner, RJ Umberger and Mikhail Grabovski. A talented group to be sure, but it will be interesting to see if numerous NHL teams will be willing to repeat some of the insanity perpetrated this year.

Unless a dramatic change occurs on the NHL landscape due to a new collective bargaining agreement, July 1 will continue to become the wrong time of the year to get a reasonable deal done, which will eventually lead to it being marginalized in importance.

The members of Leafs Nation have become increasingly impatient with the lack of progress in getting defenseman Luke Schenn?s signature on a new contract, but the restricted free agent blueliner seems unconcerned about his status according to Sean Fitz-Gerald?s piece in the National Post: (http://sports.nationalpost.com/2011/08/04/luke-schenn-not-too-worried-about-talks-with-maple-leafs/)

His agent resumed talks with the Toronto Maple Leafs this week, and while there was no news to report, neither was there any reason for anxiety.

Schenn, the restricted free agent defenceman, expects to have a new deal in place before training camp opens next month.

?Not too worried about it, as of yet,? he said. ?Right now, it?s obviously between the agent and the Leafs? management. Something will get figured out, for sure.?

The 21-year-old does not have arbitration rights, which means no arbitration hearing and no hard deadline for a contract. The only real deadline is the worst-case scenario, which would require him to be on the ice by Dec. 1 to be eligible to play in the 2011-12 season.

Neither side involved, though, has given any indication the talks would be an issue.

Don Meehan, Schenn?s agent, resumed negotiations with Leafs assistant general manager Claude Loiselle on Wednesday. That was the same day an arbitrator delivered the largest award in NHL history to Nashville Predators defenceman Shea Weber, who won a one-year contract worth US$ 7.5-million.

Schenn, coincidentally, has been working out with Weber in Kelowna, B.C.

?I kind of had an idea what?s been going on there,? Schenn said Thursday. ?You?re not going to start comparing yourself to guys like that.?

Even though the article suggests the possibility of an extended holdout, there has not been any hint of animosity between the two camps, which would indicate that the Leafs and Meehan will be able to get a deal done.
