AS GRANATA'S RESTAURANT IS SOLD, A FAMILY?AND ...

DOWNEY (Via The Downey Patriot)?After 58 years of family ownership?from father, Ralph, to son, Paul?that made their last name one of the most familiar in Downey, Granata?s Italian Restaurant is in escrow, a few shuffles of paper from being sold.

The buyer is Frank E. White, a resident of the city for nearly a decade and president of a Downey-headquartered company called Few & Sons Enterprises, Co. This is White?s first foray into the restaurant industry; his background is entertainment, specifically the U.S. Hispanic music industry.

To compensate, White says he will install his brother-in-law?just arrived from Cuba, with 20 years of experience with Italian, Spanish and Cuban cuisine?as the manager of Granato?s Italian Restaurant. Except now it will be called Granata?s Restaurant & Tapas Bar.

Ralph Granata, who came to the United States from Italy in 1947, says he is selling the restaurant because of his age?he is 82?and a desire to organize his estate so that he can better enjoy the rest of his life without nagging worries.

?If I were younger, I wouldn?t give this up,? he sighed. ?IVspent my whole life working hard to make sure the business thrives. In the process, a lot of goodwill has been generated, along with mutual respect and patrons? loyalties.

?I told myself early on never to serve anything I myself wouldn?t eat. I never cheated on the quality and quantity of the dishes we served. This I emphasized to Frank. And he was listening. The other bit of practical advice I gave him was retain the present staff. They know the customers well and know their preferences, and so on. I hope he follows my advice.?

White is shooting to open Granata?s Restaurant and Tapas Bar by the end of September?right about the time of the Taste of Downey.
