COMMENTARY | President Barack Obama gave a hint of the content for his upcoming jobs speech when he appeared in Detroit on Monday. C-SPAN reported Obama fired up the crowd with a pro-union speech and challenged the Republican led House of Representatives to support his new infrastructure based jobs proposal he will reveal on Thursday.
Why does Obama want to focus on infrastructure? The answer is simple. All road projects will strengthen the country's union based paving companies. This will pour billions of dollars into union coffers and small business will once again suffer as big union infrastructure companies and unions benefit.
Obama's new plan is not in the light completely but if this plan features only infrastructure projects, small businesses will suffer more hardship under the new jobs plan. Roads projects squeeze out small businesses in favor of big union paving companies and they will take available credit off the market.
These road projects will be financed through banks and the billions of dollars used to finance union jobs will take money out of circulation that could have gone toward small businesses. It is true the country desperately needs infrastructure work but if this current administration stays true to form, no serious reconstruction will take place.
Living in Las Vegas, I can cite two Recovery Act projects that were completely unnecessary and wasteful. The first project installed a street light on Rancho Drive at Palomino Lane.
The Ward 5 project used federal funds from the Recovery Act, explaining the need for a light based on 40,000 cars per day traveling through the intersection. There are four traffic lights in the immediate vicinity.
The next project was the Town Center Drive circle just North of Summerlin Parkway. The circle was not in dire need of asphalt replacement, yet the project removed and replaced miles of asphalt. There are plenty of roads in Las Vegas unraveling and turning into gravel. This was not one of them.
The new jobs bill Obama is about to propose will be nothing more than a money grab for paving unions and concrete workers unions. The resulting jobs will produce plenty of union dues and more union jobs. Don't be fooled by Obama, he is not looking to create jobs, he is looking to create a war chest for the 2012 presidential election.
